Wednesday morning’s training session brought some relief to the injury plagued Werder Bremen squad. Following Clemens Fritz return, when only for some light jogging, on Tuesday, Wednesday saw Hugo Almeida return to the training pitch after the clash of heads which put him out of the tie in Mönchengladbach at the weekend.

The towering figure of Per Mertesacker was also a pleasing sight to the Werder faithful, the lanky defender was able to rejoin full team training. Mertesacker had his lights put out in a clash with Gladbach’s Steven Gohouri on Sunday: “That can set you back three or four days”, admitted Mertesacker after training, “But I’m happy that it wasn’t more serious.” ‘Merte’ is still suffering with a slight vision problem in his right eye over which a deep abrasion is clear to see – “My head still hurts a little”, explained the defender. The training session was an opportunity to concentrate on football and join his colleagues with the focus on putting the injury behind him. Mertesacker didn’t want to speculate on his ability to partake against VfL Bochum at the weekend: “Luckily we don’t have another ‘English Week’, I still have some time”. His involvement today was clearly a good sign.

There were also good signs from Patrick Owomoyela, who somewhat surprisingly participated in team training on Wednesday: “We decided, after discussing it with the trainers, to move that forward a little, it was a logical step.” Owo did have to admit that it was “quite a strenuous session. It still feels a bit uncomfortable. We will have to see how the foot reacts, that was the ultimate test today.” The midfielder is convinced that his ankle will not keep him out of action again and is even considering the Bochum game: “It would be optimal to be part of the squad for that match.”

There was a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a present for Diego to take back to the changing rooms after training. The Brazilian celebrated his 22nd birthday on Wednesday – Congratulations!!!
