Werder Bremen had a successful dress rehearsal before their re-start in the Bundesliga. The current league leaders won their final friendly game before the season re-start 3:0 (1:0) against 1.FC Magdeburg. In front of 24,350 spectators at the new Magdeburg Stadium, Hugo Almeida, Daniel Jensen and Kevin Schindler got the goals for the Green-Whites. All 20 players who made the journey played a pat in the tie.

Coach Thomas Schaaf made only one change to the side which won so easily against Rot-Weiß Erfurt last Friday. Returning from injury, Hugo Almeida replaced Kevin Schindler up front for Werder. The visitors got off to a determined start and controlled the play whilst seeking an opening in a tightly packed Magdeburg defence. After six minutes Aaron Hunt did spot a chink in the defensive chain but was blocked before getting his shot away.

Openings few and far between

With the home side having made only one outing to the Werder half of the pitch, after 13 minutes then the first real opportunity arose. Frings swung in a cross which Almeida attempted to head back to Hunt but keeper Beer was just about able to gather ahead of the poised striker. Shortly after, Diego broke into the Magdeburg penalty area for the first time and played a stunning pass with the outside of his boot to split the defence. Tim Borowski got on the end of the through ball but bent his shot just wide of the post.

He game then lapsed into mediocrity on a very difficult surface. The few attempts that Magdeburg launched on the Werder goal were easily broken down by the Mertesacker and Naldo connection. The fans at the new stadium attempted to keep warm on a bitterly cold night with the odd ‘Mexican Wave’ and their team even provided a couple of near misses to lift half frozen hearts. Firstly Tim Wiese was quick off his goal line to clear a dangerous through pass before Andy Müller put a well struck shot just wide of the mark.

It was on the counter attack that Werder eventually broke the deadlock. A long, angld pass from Torsten Frings bounced just outside the Magdeburg box and, seeing the advancing keeper, Hugo Almeida chipped the ball perfectly to make it 1:0 for Werder with the Portuguese striker scoring the first goal at the new stadium (30’).

The goal was only a brief highlight in the first half which again dropped in tempo significantly. Jensen and Fritz combined well down the right but on the whole, Werder faled to find the killer instinct. The final incident of the first half was a corner for FCM which Naldo, Almeida and finally Weise managed to clear.

It took ten minutes of the second half before the game really got started. Werder had two attempted efforts in the penalty area blocked away before winning a corner which Diego swung into the centre where Naldo climbed to head goal wards but unfortunately didn’t hit the target (55’).

Chances and goals on the double

Werder were always in complete control of the game but often saw their opponents launch brave, positive attacks which rarely ended in a true shot on goal. At the other end substitute Kevin Schindler got a shot away but was denied by fresh Magdeburg keeper Rothe in the 70th minute. The third division sides first choice keeper was again on hand to deny a combination of Jensen and Hunt.

Then in the 73rd minute came thebest opportunity for the east German side. Kais Manai broke past three defenders on the left before laying off to centre forward Kubis who was unable to beat Reinke in the Werder goal. Again it was the top scorers in the Bundesliga that again showed how it was done. Hunt delivered a cross which surpassed Schindler but fell nicely for Jensen who was perfectly placed to put the ball past Kallnik on the Magdeburg goal line – 2:0 (77’). Two minutes later Schindler then struck himself to make the final score 3:0. The young striker finished off a chance set up for Hunt by Werder’s latest signing Peter Niemeyer.

Werder did have two more chances to extend their lead yet further. Naldo, who has shown a stunning thirst for goals this season, saw an opportunity to attempt a driven free-kick in the 88th minute. Luckily for the home side, keeper Rothe managed to get a hand on the hammered shot at the last moment. On the final whistle, Thiago Rockenbach da Silva found himself alone in front of goal but lashed the bobbling ball high over the crossbar into the protective netting behind the goal.
