On Tuesday, 23.01.2007 Werder Bremen will play their final friendly game before the Bundesliga re-start at the all new arena in Magdeburg which is expected to be packed with 27,000 fans. The game against third division FC Magdeburg is due to kick-off at 7pm with live coverage on Germany’s DSF from 6:30pm.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf is expected to put out his best team in Magdeburg as a dress rehearsal for next Sunday’s Bundesliga clash with Hanover 96. Following his return to team training on Monday, Hugo Almeida will make the trip to Saxony-Anhalt. Whether or not his striker partner and German international Miroslav Klose (Groin injury) will be able to take part will be decided on Tuesday morning. Definitely not on the flight is Patrick Owomoyela.
Ex Werder man Habryka misses out
The anticipation of the visit of the Bundesliga league leaders is massive in Magdeburg. “We’re all looking forward to this game and want to put on a good performance. You can even feel that in training. The lads are really giving their all, they all want to participate”, emphasised FC trainer Dirk Heyne. The ex-Bundesliga goalkeeper (24 appearances for Borussia Mönchengladbach) has been coach at his home town club since 2001 and after the 2006 promotion to the third division, has this season managed 29 points from 19 games leaving his side in a comfortable midfield position going into the winter break.
The side from the Saxony-Anhalt state capital hope to secure their position in the ‘Regionalliga Nord’ (Regional league, north) as quickly as possible after the re-start and can look to ex-Werder man Michael habryka for help in doing so. A knee ligament injury will mean he misses out on the tie with his ex-club though. Back in the 2004/2005 season, Habryka played 16 games for the Werder Under 23’s and scored one goal.
