Werder Bremen comfortably won their friendly game 5:2 (3:1) against Rot-Weiß Erfurt. The goals for the Green-Whites were scored by Tim Borowski (4’), Diego (9’), Aaron Hunt as well as a brace from 18 year old Kevin Schindler (54’, 73’). For the third division side from Thuringen, Kumbela (28’) and Görke (90’ pen) got on the score sheet. In the second half, Werder’s new signing Peter Niemeyer made his debut in the Green-White.

Kevin Schindler made his debut in the starting eleven. The 18 year old joined Aaron Hunt up front, unsurprisingly replacing the injured Hugo Almeida and Miroslav Klose.

Early lead through ‘Boro’ and Diego

Werder took control of proceedings early on in the game and had the lead with the first notable attack of the game. Aaron Hunt laid the ball off to Diego, who curled a shot brilliantly but only fount the right post. Tim Borowski was perfectly placed though to place the loose ball in the net to make it 1:0.with just four minutes gone.

A confident and dominating Werder didn’t let up and were soon celebrating again. Daniel Jensen played a ‘Killer-Pass’ to Diego, splitting the Erfurt defence and the Brazilian playmaker rounded keeper Dirk Orlishausen to slide the ball over the line and make it 2:0 (9’). The youngster Kevin Schindler had the chance to grab a third three minutes later but having jinked through but then shot high and wide of the mark.

With 20 minutes played, Werder too their foot off the gas leaving Erfurt the opportunity to find room and settle on the ball. In the 28 minute, Dominik Kumbela eventually found the net for Rot-Weiß after Tim Wiese had twice denied the third division side brilliantly from close range. Werder took the goal in their stride and raised their play again. Borowski had an effort blocked by Orlishausen (33’), before Aaron Hunt, after some clever play by Borowski and Womé, restored the two goal deficit – 3:1 (41’).

Five changes in the break

In the half time break Thomas Schaaf opted to ring the changes and brought Andi Reinke, Petri Pasanen, Christian Schulz, Jurica Vranjes and captain Frank Baumann. The personnel switches had no real effect on the flow in Werders game. The new man in the Erfurt goal, Michael Ratajczak was called into action soon after the re-start to make a save from Aaron Hunt who had delayed a pass to Kevin Schindler from a tight angle for too long (52’).

Two minutes later the 18 year old Green-White managed to notch up his first goal for the senior side. This time Hunt’s pass was more precise and Schindler was through with only the keeper to beat. Cool headedly Schindler slipped the ball passed the on-rushing keeper into the bottom right hand corner – 4:1.

Chance for Pasanen

Werder were in complete control of the game and were creating chances at three minute intervals. Ratajczak was off his line quickly to stop Borowski in his tracks (57’) and again from point blank range to save from Diego, who had dribbled his way past two Erfurt defenders. The Erfurt goalkeeper was happy not to be called into action to stop a Pasanen shot. Werder’s Finnish international dragged his shot wide as he attempted to get on the end of a deflected Hunt effort (68’).

Instead it was again Kevin Schindler who drove home Werder’s fifth and last of the night with a well placed shot. New signing Peter Niemeyer made his debut on the hour, coming to replace Per Mertesacker, but the young defender may want to forget his first outing in the Green-White as quickly as possible. Werder’s new number 25 gave away a penalty in the final minute which Görke slammed home to make the final score 5:2 for the Bundesliga leaders.
