On Wednesday morning, Werder Bremen held a press conference to present, Peter Niemeyer, their first new signing of the winter break. The 23 year old defender last played for Twente Enschede, the current fifth placed side in Holland’s Ehrendivision and has now signed with the Green-Whites until 30.06.2011. “We are happy to have been able to move the transfer forward by six months”, announced general manager Klaus Allofs on presenting Niemeyer to the collected press. “Peter has a vast amount of experience for a player of his age, he made his break through in Holland, even against such teams as Feyenoord Rotterdam or Ajax Amsterdam – those are just the requirements needed to break into the Bundesliga.” Thomas Schaaf was also optimistic about Niemeyers perspectives at Werder: “He meets the requirements and possesses good qualities. We expect him to find his feet here and play a decisive roll at the club.”

Allofs: “His versatility is Peter’s strength!”

Schaaf admitted too that Werder had had an eye on Niemeyer for some time and he recently got to watch the 1,91m tall centre half play for the German Under 21’s in the European Championship. Schaaf summed up: “He has a lot to offer and he’s proven that at both club and Under 21 level.” Niemeyer has played 106 first division games in Holland’s Ehrendivision and was called into the German Under 21 side six times by Dieter Eilts. Thomas Schaaf explained what he had observed from Niemeyer so far: “He is totally at ease on the ball, which comes from the consistent tactical training which is at the forefront of Dutch football. He can put together a lot on the football pitch and is applicable in many positions. His versatility is his strength!” In recent times Niemeyer has played most regularly in defensive midfield and at the centre of defence but he can also slot in as a full-back. A further plus point!” Werder’s sporting directors were also impressed by Niemeyer’s personable character: “He is ambitious and wants to prove himself. As a character he definitely suits us”, said Thomas Schaaf.

The continuation of a promising trail

Klaus Allofs sees the signing of Niemeyer as the continuation of a process that began in summer: “Peter fits into a whole array of new signings made by Werder such as Clemens Fritz and Per Mertesacker. We hope now that our way can take this direction.” Thomas Schaaf’s assesses the situation as a good example rather than a pressure situation: “It’s a big chance for him to be here and to see how quickly he can find his feet in Bremen and maybe even recommend himself for a place in the national team.” Niemeyer can relax in then knowledge that he can integrate into life at the Weser Stadium in peace and continue his development: “We are completely convinced that it will work out with him. We’ll just have to see how quickly that takes place”, remarked a patient Klaus Allofs.
