Werder Bremen haven’t taken the easy option for their first friendly game of 2007. On Monday, 08.01.2007 at 7pm (Live on Eurosport), the current Bundesliga league leaders will take on the third placed side from the Turkish first division, Besiktas Istanbul at the Topkapi-Sport Complex in Belek, Turkey.

Werder Bremen haven’t taken the easy option for their first friendly game of 2007. On Monday, 08,01.2007 at 7pm (Live on Eurosport), the current Bundesliga league leaders will take on the third placed side from the Turkish first division, Besiktas Istanbul at the Topkapi-Sport Complex in Belek, Turkey.

The Turkish side, who currently lie behind city rivals Fenerbahce (8 points difference) and Galatasary (1 point), are also in Belek preparing for their ‘Super Lig’ re-start against Vestel Manisaspor on 27.01.2007. With that in mind the Turks must be in a similar state of fitness as Werder Bremen.

The club, where last season ex-Werder star Ailton was under contract, have played 17 games so far this season winning eight. The Istanbul club have also registered five draws and suffered four defeats. Their top scorer so far this season is 21 year old Brazilian youngster Deivson, with seven goals to his credit. Just a day before his 22nd birthday the Brazilian could gift himself his own best birthday present with a goal against the German table toppers. The other two top stars in the side, since Ailton’s departure for HSV, are also two Brazilian’s, the midfielders Kleberson and Ricardinho. Along with them there are also the Argentine Matias Delgaod and the 21 year old Turkish midfielder Burak Yilmaz as well as 25 year old defender Gökhan Zan.

Interestingly, in the Besiktas squad there are also two German players. While the 18 year old Aydin Karabulut , thanks to his age, has as yet been unable to make a name for himself, the 31 year old Mustafa Dogan has a more illustrious name after having played for a number of clubs in Germany and receiving call ups to a number of DFB selections. He began his career at Bayer 05 Uerdingen and after a long break from the Bundesliga, in Werder’s double winning 2003/2004 season he was signed to 1. FC Cologne. In 1999 the midfield man played two internationals for Germany.

In the UEFA Cup, things haven’t worked out quite so well for the team from French trainer Jean Tigana. In their preliminary group they were beaten 2:1 on the final match day by Werder’s Bundesliga opponents Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The Turkish side do have a fantastic record in European football having qualified for the UEFA Cup 22 times in the last 23 years.

Werder coach Thomas Schaaf has been playing his cards close to his chest as to how he will set out his team for Monday’s friendly game. Definitely not taking part, although part of the travelling party, will be Aaron Hunt (knee injury) and Frank Baumann (Achilles tendon problem). The club captain, who had been out of action for some time, returned to team training at the weekend but he will not be ready to take part again by Monday: “I do imagine I that I will be available during this period of preparation.”
