Werder Bremen took second place at the indoor tournament ‚Cup der Öffentlichen Versicherung Oldenburg’ on Thursday evening with a combination of strong play and scoring plenty of goals. The Bundesliga’s current top club were pipped at the post in the final with a 4:2 defeat by Regional League leaders VfL Osnabrück. Werder were not without success though boasting Under 23 player Martin Harnik as tournament top scorer with four goals and also the competitions top keeper in Christian Vander within their ranks.
In Group A the Green-Whites were faced by Bundesliga 12th placed side VfL Wolfsburg and the sixth placed club in the Polish first division Lech Polsen. Werder clearly won their first group with two clear wins and progressed as group winner ahead of Wolfsburg who went through to the semi-finals on goal difference. In Group B, hosts and non-league VfB Oldenburg, third division VfL Osnabrück and Bundesliga side Armenia Bielefeld played for the two places in the semi-finals with Bielefeld and Osnabrück progressing.
Thomas Schaaf took the following eleven players to battle it out for Werder at a packed Weser-Ems-Halle: Patrick Owomoyela, Daniel Jensen, Petri Pasanen, Jerome Polenz, Christian Schulz and goalkeeper Christian Vander were the professional representatives. The sextette were bolstered by Martin Harnik, Rockenbach da Silva, Amaury Bischoff, Norman Theuerkauf and keeper Kasper Jensen
from the reserves.
