With immediate effect, Werder Bremen's Leon Andreasen will be playing for FSV Mainz 05. The 23 year old Dane will go to mainz on loan until the end of the season. Should the club, who are currently rooted to the bottom of the Bundesliga table, avoid relegation, the deal could be extended for a further year. Werder's general manager Klaus Allofs made the announcement on Tuesday evening.

"This was not an easy decision for us to make as we are still convinced of leon Andreasen's abilities. We are agreed though that for his personal development to gather as much match practice as possible. This is not an realistic possibility for him in our current situation", admitted Allofs.

Head coach Thomas Schaaf said: "We followed up on Leon's own wishes with this loan deal. We had been discussing in recent weeks how we could get him more match practice and we see this transfer as the right step."

Klaus Allofs reitterated the fact that in this agreement with Mainz, there is no sale option involved: "That was the basis for this deal with Leon Andreasen", noted the general manager who admitted to having been in contact with Hanover 96 in recent days. The Hanover club had also shown interest in the young Dane. The deal fell through as Hanover were not willing to pass on an option to buy.

Leon Andreasen made his move from Danish first division side Aarhus GF to Bremen in the summer of 2005 and played 17 games in his first season in the Bundesliga. So far this season he has played in four Bundesliga games and two Champions League ties. The youngster was also part of the Werder side which beat Bayern Munich in the League Cup final.
