We’ve thrown together some more of the important moments of the last year which have so far gone unmentioned.
47th minute: Diego!! For the first time the young Brazilian sends the Bundesliga fans at the Weser Stadium into raptures. On the second match day of the season the 21 year old took on a cross by Hugo Almeida on his chest before twisting to pull off a stunning overhead kick which was goal bound and could only be prevented from counting by a fantastic save by Jörg Butt’s lightening reflexes.

59th minute: Chelsea are forced to make changes! Never before have substitutions by the opposition at the Weser Stadium been met with such amazement. With his side trailing 1:0, Chelsea coach Josè Mourinho saw no option but to look to his bench for assistance, removing Mikel and Drogba from play to introduce the not unknown duo of Arjen Robben and Andrij Scevchenko in desperate search of an equaliser. Werder coach Thomas Schaaf later commented: “Not every trainer has such options.”
65th minute: Ailton! Oho, Ailton! Ohohoho!! Never before was a wildly miscued effort by the Brazilian so euphorically celebrated. The Werder top scorer of the double winning season 2003/2004, now in HSV colours sliced a sitter wide of the mark with only the keeper to beat in the ‘final’ for a direct qualifying place for the Champions League. It would have been the lead for the Hamburg club which could have seen them shut up shop, but as faith would have it, the story was to have a very different ending.
66th minute: Klasnic clinches the League Cup. With his second of the day at the Zentralstadion in Leipzig, the Croatian sealed the first League Cup win in the Green-Whites history. And that against none other than Bayern Munich. ‘The Killer’ likes nothing more than putting the ball past his favourite keeper Oliver Kahn.

75th minute: With his 22nd goal of the season in a 4:2 win against MSV Duisburg, Mirolsav Klose took the award as the Bundesliga’s top scorer of 2005/2006. At he end of the season Leverkusen’s Dimitar Berbatov took second place with 21 goals before making his move to the Premier League in England with Tottenham Hotspurs.
77th minute: Soother celebrations for Almeida. What a start! On the second match day of the season against Leverkusen, Hugo Almeida came off the bench to give Werder a 2:1 win. The Portugese international had a surprise for all with his goal celebration as he took off in the direction of the bench with a baby’s pacifier in his mouth. The greeting was aimed towards his wife and new born child. The lofty, young striker had found the net in Hanover the previous week too.
86th minute: Na-Na-Naldo!! The Brazilian grasped the winter championship with a vital and rocketed free-kick against Wolfsburg on the final match day before the winter break. The lanky centre-back hammered home his shot with just minutes to go to make it 2:1 and the fans got to celebrate a ‘Christmas Title’ in 2006.
