34 Bundesliga matches, 8 Champions League ties, 2 DFB Cup games, 2 League Cup clashes and 14 friendlies as well as an indoor tournament

34 Bundesliga matches, 8 Champions League ties, 2 DFB Cup games, 2 League Cup clashes and 14 friendlies as well as an indoor tournament have been stats as far as playing time is concerned for Werder Bremen in the last 365 days. 2006 is almost a thing of the past for the Werder players but werder.de has been there every step of the way. We’ve thrown together some more of the important moments of the last year which have so far gone unmentioned.

1st minute: Kick-off in the most scandalous game of the season as referee Dr. Felix Brych got a DFB Cup game underway against FC St. Pauli in Hamburg on 25.01.2006, on a pitch that should never have been declared playable. The surface way frozen solid and covered in an unplayably slippery sheet of snow. The home side had no qualms about playing the game on the retched surface, knowing that they had little chance otherwise against their top flight opponents. Total nonsense. With only months to go before the World Cup was due to get underway, the health of German internationals was being put at stake. Miroslav klose was forced out of the game and left sidelined for weeks with a shoulder injury. To rub salt into Werder’s wounds, the DFB later apologised for the decision to allow the game to be played.

16th minute: Micoud’s last goal in the Bundesliga. Still waiting for a final decision on how long his suspension would be after a sending off against Schalke 04, Johan Micoud was passed eligible to play against Duisburg. The Frenchman and his team mates turned on the style. Following a fabulous combination, Micoud scored his second of the game in the 16th minute in a game that would finish 5:3. It was the Frenchman’s 31st goal for the Green-Whites.

23rd minute: ‚Le Chef’ bids farewell!! With a goal, Johan Micoud waved adieu to the Werder fans who travelled all the way to Oldenburg to see him score what was to be the golden goal in a friendly between Werder and his new club Giorndins Bordeaux. The firey Frenchman was cheered and applauded and left for his home country with the backing of the Green-White faithful.

29th minute: Goalkeeper Christian Vander came to his first Bundesliga involvement for Werder. The keeper who had come to Bremen to fill in as number 2 after Andi Reinkes horror injury had been on the bench until 01.04.2006 when Tim Wiese picked up a back injury against Eintracht Frankfurt and the on-loan man from Bochum suddenly found himself between the posts. Vander was lacking in match practice but it didn’t show for a second with the keeper pulling off a number of classy saves and performing strongly.

30th minute: The battle of the year. Ties against Schalke are always something special. The clash on 23.04.2006 was no different and even had what was a week long added time period. Schalkes Christian Poulsen hit the floor theatrically after Johan Micoud appeared to tug his shorts. Television pictures were enough for the DFB to hand down a delayed suspension. Right until his final days at Bremen Joe neither understood Poulsens reaction nor the decision of the DFB.

33rd minute: Blackout for Levski keeper in Sofia. One of the most curious goals in Werder’s history on the third match day of the Champions League qualifying round as the Sofia keeper and defender combined to give their visitors the lead. The 18 year old reserve keeper attempter to take on a back pass from his defender, but taking an eye off the ball allowed it to roll over his foot and the goal line. Werder exploited the confusion within the Bulgarian ranks to score a further two before the half-time whistle blew.

39th minute: Champions League goal for ‘Schulle’. Not only was Christian Schulz boiling over with happiness having scored but it was also the first champions league goal for the lad from Bassum near Bremen. And that in the last sixteen play-off against Juventus Turin. To get his goal the left footer had to get past some of the worlds best defenders and the later World Cup winning keeper Gianluigi Buffon.

40th minute: Yellow card for Schulz – the youngsters post goal celebrations were a little too extravagant for the referee.

Half-time: The sixth honourary captain. At half time in the first home game of 2006, Dieter Burdenski who holds the record for Werder 444 Bundesliga games was given the honour having stepped down from his post as keeper trainer after many years of service to the club.
