Werder Bremen could present themselves with the best Christmas present of all with a win against VfL Wolfsburg to seal the mid-season winter championship title. Even if the title itself is not exactly worth anything, Werder coach Thomas Schaaf would very much like to finish 2006 on a high: "Whenever a title is available, we want to be a part of it. The winter title is a acknowledgement of our achievements." Christian Schulz has nothing against maintaining the top spot over the winter break: "The winter title is good for the soul. You can see yourself on top of the league although you don't have to play for over a month."

Werder Bremen could find themselves on top of the league during the winter break for the sixth time. The last time was the double winning season of 2003/2004. Back then it was a 3:0 win over Hansa Rostock that gave Werder the 39 points to take the mid-season prize. Thomas Schaaf will not be able to match that number of points (currently 33), but the goal difference of 45:20 from that season could be topped as they currently have 45 goals on the for side with 21 on the against list.

Werder took the league title on three of the occasions that they were top at Christmas - an impressive record. In 2003/2004 and 1987/1988 Werder maintained the top spot right the way through till the end of the season, with only a brief slip to second place in 1964/1965. Twice Werder failed to make good of their winter position, in 1985/1986 Werder were knocked off the top on the last day of the season and in 1990/1991 the Green-Whites finished in third place.

In total, 30 of the 43 league championships which have so far been played out were won by the winter champions - including in the last four years. A run that Ivan Klasnic would like to see continued: "It's often the case that the winter champions who take the crown at the end of the season. That we want to do."

The end of the season is a long way off but Thomas Schaaf would very much like to start the New Year at the top of the table: "It's a wonderful situation to be the front runner. It means the others are playing catch-up." Although VfB Stuttgart and FC Schalke 04 are breating down their necks, Christian Schulz still sees Bayern Munich as Werders toughest opponent for the title: "The only way to the title is through Bayern Munich, they will be our toughest opponent. Although they didn't exactly play the best football so far this season, they are still up there with the top sides", warned 'Schulle'.
