Since Wednesday evening, the first group of possible opponents for Werder Bremen in the UEFA Cup knock-out stages was made clear. The Green-Whites can look forward to seeing some attractive names in the pot for the draw which will be made on Friday, 15.12.2006 in Nyon. Aside from AS Nancy, Celta Vigo and Paris St. Germain, with ex-Portugese international Pauleta up front, Werder could also be faced with 1995 Champions League winner and 1992 UEFA Cup winner Ajax Amsterdam. On Thursday evening, four further possible opponents will seal their place in the draw.
Having come into the UEFA Cup competition as a third placed side in a Champions League group, Werder can only be drawn against a second placed team from the UEFA Cup group stage. ZSKA Moskau, Benfica Lisbon, AEK Athen, Steaua Bukarest, Girondis Bordeaux, Spartak Moscow and Schachtjor Donezk have all also made the jump from the Champions League to Europes second biggest tournament. The other qualifiers from the group stage of the UEFA tournament so far are Fenerbahce Istanbul, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers, Feyenoord Rotterdam, SV Zulk-Waregem, Espanyol Barcelona, Panathinaikos Athens and Hapoel Tel Aviv.
