UEFA Cup facts:

Did you know…

…since the UEFA Cup came into being back during the 1971/1972 season, only five German clubs have won the title? The most recent winner was FC Schalke 04 in 1997, with Bayern Munich 1996), Bayer Leverkusen (1988), Eintracht Frankfurt (1980) and Borussia Mönchengaldbach (1979 and 1975) also lofting the cup.

…that Werder Bremen’s best UEFA Cup experiences came in the 1988 and 1990 seasons?

On both occasions the Green-Whites bowed out in the semi-finals. In 1988 Bayer Leverkusen edged Bremen out (1:0 in Leverkusen, 0:0 in Bremen). Two years later it was FC Florence who did the damage at the last hurdle (1:1 in Bremen, 0:0 in Florence).

…that Werder’s last UEFA Cup outing was some four years ago? On 14.11.2002, the home side could only manage a 3:3 draw at the Weser Stadium against Vitesse Arnheim. Bremen lost the first leg on 31.10.2002 in Arnheim 2:1.

…that in his first year as trainer, Thomas Schaaf managed his best ranking in the tournament since he has been at the helm? Back then the Green-Whites bowed out at the quarter final stage against Arsenal London (0:2 in London, 2:4 in Bremen). Prior to that Werder had eliminated Olympique Lyon and AC Parma.

…that the UEFA Cup could mean another pairing with some of the top clubs in Europe? Aside from Werder, teams such as Glasgow Rangers, Tottenham Hotspurs, FC Parma, Espanyol Barcelona, Ajax Amsterdam, Newcastle United and Johan Micoud’s new club Girondins Bordeaux have also guaranteed their places in the draw for the knock-out stages.
