Miroslav Klose is the Werder ‚Player of the Year 2005/2006’. The prize for the title was presented to the striker by Werder executive Klaus-Dieter Fischer at the WUSEUM on Monday. Klose, who this calendar year not only managed to attain the title of top scorer in the Bundesliga but also won the Golden Boot at the World Cup finals, was almost unanimously selected to take the title for the second year in a row.
“I’m really delighted about this award, particularly as it was voted for by the fans. The season was full of changes and was a difficult one to boot. There were a lot of ups and downs and then to top it al off a wonderful final in Hamburg as we came second. Being awarded now for that season rounds the whole thing off for me. All I can say is that it is a lot of fun playing for Werder”, commented Miro Klose.
As is the tradition, the winning player donates a gift of his own for the display case dedicated to the award winner: “This year I have opted to donate two pieces of memorabilia from the 2006 World Cup, as that tournament without doubt played a huge part in my success. The experience was also something very special. Contrary to the 2002 tournament, which zipped past me in what was almost a dream, this time around I experienced every second deliberately”, explained Klose who showed a white jersey which he wore in the opening game against Costa Rica and a pair of white shorts which he wore in the semi-final against Italy.”
The voting for the Werder ‘Player of the Year’ is conducted by the visitors to the WUSEUM since 2004. The visitors all receive a voting slip containing the names of all valid players for the period involved. From the players available, the German national striker picked up 45,68% of the poll. All other votes were spread amongst the other 19 possible members of the squad. In second place was fellow international Tim Borowski with 12,93% and the bronze went to Ivan Klasnic (11,20%). In fourth was now former player Johan Micoud who collected 7,60% of the votes casted. In total 3,054 made their opinions known.
From all participants, Miroslav Klose drew the names of three lucky winners. First place was two tickets to a Werder game with a subsequent dinner in the VIP area at the table of the board of management which went to Niels Worgulla from Düsseldorf. Second place of two match tickets also went to Düsseldorf to Tammo Zmmermann. Third prize of an autographed ball went to Sebastian Görecke from Magdeburg.
