A physicist translated the word „Drive“ as „The speed and kinetic energy of a mass”. Thomas Schaaf may not be a scientist, rather a football instructor, but when he says that Alemannia Aachen have brought ‘Drive’ to the league, then he probably means the same thing. Again and again on Thursday, Schaaf praised the determination and speed of Aachen’s players as well as the fight they present in their game. Mechanics offered Schaaf further keywords to describe Aachen such as ‘Dynamic’, ‘Powerful’ and that they possess a goal ward bound drive. Without doubt, Werder Bremen can expect a tough tie in the far west of Germany on Saturday.

Acoustics are also considered a partial element of physics and they will also have a roll to play on Saturday. The true star in Aachen is the stadium, with it’s amazing atmosphere. At the pre-match press conference, before Bremen were asked about their own current situation or their feelings on Alemannia, the first question was about the Tivoli: “We can’t afford to allow ourselves to be intimidated by the Tivoli, we are not as yet”, explained Thomas Schaaf, but added respectfully: “There is always a fantastic atmosphere there, the fans there live with the game and spurn their team on, you can really feel that.” Schaaf is of no illusion that that is not of the utmost importance to the team: “Especially at home, Aachen can tank up on the self-confidence and strength to try their luck.” That in particular when it is least expected. “You’ve always got to have Aachen on your cards, they can, as in the last game, battle right to the last”, warned the Werder coach. Alemannia managed a draw last Sunday against Nuremberg thanks to a goal in the final minute. “Such a lucky point win can really push a team forward”, admitted general manager Klaus Allofs with respect to the recent lack of form from Alemannia.

Despite the goal from Plaßhenrich, Aachen’s recent form has been a real roller-coaster ride. The team have only managed two points from the last five games. A point in Dortmund a fortnight ago was preceded by defeats in Cottbus, Bielefeld and Stuttgart. Three home defeats leave doubts over the influence of the Tivoli over other teams this time around. No wonder really, it’s the clubs first season in the top flight since 1970. Their promotion in 1967 and second place in 1969 was followed by the drop the following year. Since then the club has waded between the second, third and even fourth divisions in Germany before they finally achieved their goal this season. “They have created some positive headlines since returning and have even managed some surprising results”, remarked Thomas Schaaf respectfully. The fact is that trainer Michael Frontzeck’s team even topped the table for a brief period. A night to remember for the yellow-blacks who, after their Friday night game on the seventh match day sprung to top spot with a 3:1 win against Mainz – it was their last win.

Still, the match away to the leagues 13th placed team is no easy task for Werder as Thomas Schaaf made clear. Aachen have impressed him with their “Unbelievably pacy , willingness and fast switching from defence to attack.” They also possess a compact defence but will have to make do without their suspended new signing Nico Herzig (Burghausen). The werder defence will have to deal with Sergio Pinto and Jeffery Leiwakabesy: “They really get things moving up front”, praised Thomas Schaaf. He has also been impressed by Marius Ebbers (“Often shields the ball well as a sole striker, giving the strong running midfielders a chance to get up in support”) and Sascha Rösler (“Directs the game, gets things moving”).

One of Werder Bremen’s most significant players has particularly special memories of the Tivoli. It’s the return to his old hunting ground for Torsten Frings. Back in 1997, a 20 year old striker made the move from Bremen and has since then developed into one of the World’s finest midfielders. The German international has matured into a player willing to take on responsibility and drive his team forward. Schaaf is demanding “Battling spirit, resistance and combination football”, from his team if they are to beat the home side.To do this he will need his number 22 at the top of his game, a player who understands the physics of football like few others.
