The new traffic concept for the Weser Stadium, which should come into effect from the coming season, was officially presented to the general public for the first time on Wednesday.

The new traffic concept for the Weser Stadium, which should come into effect from the coming season, was officially presented to the general public for the first time on Wednesday. A works group presented the concept at the Bremen City Hall, during a press conference, to a gathering of members of the Bremen senate, representatives from the Bremer Weserstadion GmbH, the BSAG, the Brepark GmbH, the minor exchange and residents from the Weser Stadium vicinity as well as Werder boss Manfred Müller. The result of the efforts of the last few months were revealed.

The concept is supported by three major pillars:

- A better and extended Park+Drive system

- Reserved parking places in the immediate vicinity of the stadium for visitors

- The creation of a residents-protection-zone during major events at the Weser Stadium

Manfred Müller was satisfied after the presentation: “This concept results from a survey we held among local residents around the stadium which we begun one and a half years ago. Aside from that we also had to take into account our plans to expand the stadium by eight to ten thousand extra seats and make that function.”

The new P+R Concept ,which offers 6,100 park places, will cover a great deal of the estimated 8,500 places needed. Particularly impressive are the P+R places at the Hemelinger Harbour which offers the largest capacity with 4,000 places. To add to that there will be further places at the Hansa-Carree in Hastedt, at the Hansator, in the Überseestadt and at ‘Krupp Atlas Electronic’ in Sebaldsbrück. This should offer a further 3,000 P+R places.

Blocking of Osterdeich planned during games

This expanded system will mean an increase in the number of ‘Fan-drop-off Busses’ which will take their places along the Osterdeich along with the regional busses from the city. Taxi’s will also be allowed to park on the Osterdeich. For safety reason, during match times the dam will be blocked off – a detour route will be sign-posted.

Around the stadium itself there are a further 2,500 parking places available – the newly planned park house at the Central Clinic Bremen is included in this calculation. A >b>Parking Place Reservation is necessary through Werder Bremen and they can only be booked at the beginning of the season. With added public traffic information, visitors can remain informed of the availability of parking around the stadium.

Residents-Protection-Zone: No parking place searches prior to a game at the stadium

In an attempt to prevent the search for parking places between Osterdeich, Sielwall, Schwarzen Meer and Stader Strasse, a residents protection zone is planned. Within this zone, from two and a half hours prior to a game until fifteen minutes before kick-off, only cars with an identifiable notice will be granted permission to enter these areas.

Manfred Müller was delighted about the general acceptance of the plans: “The plans got the nod on Tuesday at the Leitbild-Gremium where the residents are well represented. It’s the first time in the history of the Weser stadium that such a project has been discussed with local residents and for the first time their opinions were taken into account. With that we can again show how Werder Bremen considers itself a part of the city of Bremen and identifies with the problems and interests of its’ people.”

Important issues for the stadium expansion settled

The senator for construction, environment and traffic control, Ronald-Mike Neumeyer commented on the fact that the traffic congestion relief in the west part of the city of major importance to the planned stadium expansion. “Werder Bremen is not just a fantastic advertisement and point of value for the north western region of the country, it is also a flourishing business. With both home games in the Bundesliga and international competitions often sold out months in advance, it is clear that the expansion of the stadiums capacity is essential. At the same time we must consider the congestion on streets around the stadium and the disruption for local residents. That made a new traffic concept so important to the expansion of the stadium and it also had to be one which suited the people living in the district. We now have a good basis for the optimal organisation of traffic conditions. As far as the senator is concerned, there is nothing in the way now of beginning a stadium expansion.”
