On the 12th match day, Werder Bremen had to endure their second defeat of the season. In front of a 40,000 strong crowd at the Weser Stadium, the home side went down 3:1 (1:1) against Borussia Dortmund whose goals came from Alexander Frei (7’), Tinga (53’) and Marc-Andre Kruska with a penalty (85’). Miroslav Klose did put Werder back on level terms after the visitors had taken the lead but after ten games unbeaten, the Green-Whites suffered at home.

Captain Frank Baumann was not available to aide his side due to a recurrence of an Achilles injury meaning trainer Thomas Schaaf was forced into changes. Torsten Frings filled the position in front of the back four, Jurica Vranjes took up the German internationals position on the right, leaving an opening on the left flank for Christian Schulz in the starting eleven.

Early goal rocks the boat

Werder found it difficult to get into the game against a determined and brave Dortmund side. Aside from a powerful drive by Torsten Frings which Martin Amedick deflected away for a corner, there was little action in front of Roman Weidenfeller’s goal. At the other end it was a different story though. Nuri Sahin played the ball to ex-Bremen man Nelson Valdez who played a pass into the centre. Clemens Fritz attempted to clear the danger with a sliding tackle but unfortunately his effort fell directly to the feet of Alexander Frei and the Swiss international took his chance to make it 1:0 for the visitors (7’).

Both Nelson Valdez, with an attempted lob (10’) and Ebi Smolarek with a header (13’) had the chance to extend BVB’s lead but failed to do so. It took a free-kick from Pierre Womé was the first sign of life from Bremen. On the quarter hour, a foul by Christian Worns on Miroslav Klose, who was clean through, should have been punished with more than just a yellow card.

Klose took his revenge in the best way possible. After a pass from Vranjes, the German international striker foiled Worns twice and then Florian Kringe before slipping the ball into the bottom right corner to pull Werder back level (29’). BVB missed three chances to take the lead again before half time. Firstly Smolarek dragged his shot off target from eight meters out (37’). Then Frei, accepting a misplaced clearance by Per Mertesacker, should have done better (43’). The Swiss international should certainly put his side again right on half time with a header from three meters out which he somehow nodded wide of the post.

Set back at the re-start

After the break, BVB again pulled of the coup of getting an early goal. From a Sahin corner, Tinga rose to head Dortmund ahead again (53’). Klose headed the ball straight into Weidenfeller’s arms a minute later and with that Thomas Schaaf decided it was time to make some changes. Tim Borowski returned to the fray after a lay off with a knee injury and Ivan Klasnic was also thrown into the mix. In the 65th minute Weidenfeller had to be alert again to deny Klose who was put through by Klasnic. Werder put the pressure on but the club from the Ruhr Valley were resilient. Valdez was through on goal for BVB and rounded Tim Wiese but couldn’t get the ball back goal wards (66’).

During the closing phase, Wiese’s opposite number, Roman Weidenfeller was to prove too tough a nut for Werder to crack. The keeper reacted lightening sharply to punch a Borowski shot away (71’) and then turned a headed effort from substitute Hugo Almeida over the bar for a corner (75’). The on form keeper blocked a Klose effort from point blank range and as the striker eventually did get past Weidenfeller, Tinga was on hand to clear off the line. Instead of an equaliser, Werder soon found themselves 3:1 down. Naldo pulled down Nelson Valdez in the box and Kruska neatly tucked away the resulting penalty (85’). There was no time for Bremen to have any further affect on the score line and so the match ended with the visitors taking all three points back to the Ruhr Valley.
