On the tenth match day of the season, Werder Bremen and Energie Cottbus drew 1:1 (0:0). The visitors took the lead, in front of a 38,000 strong crowd at the Weser Stadium, shortly after the break through Francis Kioyo (49’) but substitute Ivan Klasnic rescued a point for the Green-Whites with a 76th minute header. The result brought Werder’s run of six wins on the trot to an but the league leaders still remain undefeated.

Miroslav Klose was confirmed fit having recovered from flu in time for the game and his international team mate Torsten Frings was also feeling up to the task after his muscular difficulties. With that, trainer Thomas Shaaf was in a position to send out the same eleven which won 3:0 against Levski in Sofia in the Champions League.

Werder attempted to get the ball flowing among their ranks from the outset but found they had no way past a defensively very well drilled Cottbus side who left the league leaders little room to play their game and couldn’t find any openings in the first twenty minutes. The first test for Energie keeper Tomislav Piplica came through a Pierre Womé who drove in a free kick but the keeper got down quickly to smother the defelected effort.

Klose hits the crossbar

Werder remained patient and the chances did come their way. After a one-two between Klose and Diego, Igor Mitreski was lucky to see his out-stretched leg redirect the Brazilians shot past the post (25’). A minute later Per Mertesacker turned to volley a loose clearance inches wide of the left up-right whilst Pierre Womè flashed an effort past the right post on the half hour.

Cottbus received their wake up call in Ernst when Miro Klose rose to head a Frings delivery against the top of the crossbar (36’). Naldo was able to turn a Kevin McKenna’s header away for a corner (39’). A minute later Daniel Gunkel released a venomous shot which just cleared the Werder bar. After a Naldo free-kick also failed to reach its destination the sides went into the half time break with a stalemate.

Just after the re-start, the visitors caught Werder cold with a lightening quick counter attack. Kioyo marched through the Werder half from the half way line and with no-one to stop him he hammered a ferocious shot from 25 yards into the top right corner of Tim Wiese’s net (49’). Two minutes later Per Mertesacker was able to block the Cameroon man from doubling the Cottbus lead.

Klasnic makes things even

Werder battled hard against the potential defeat and were frustrated when referee Babak Rafati waved away a penalty appeal when Daniel Ziebig shoved Torsten Frings over in the box (58’). Naldo again tried his luck from the edge of the box with no luck (64’) and substitute Ivan Klasnic was denied with a spinning shot by Piplica (72’).

With his next effort, the Croatian had better luck. Klasnic and was well placed to head a return header from the back post by sub Hugo Almeida past the stranded keeper, who did manage to get a hand to the ball but not enough to keep it out – 1:1 (76’). Whilst Aaron Hunt blew Werders best chance to take all three points in the 84th minute, it was Tim Wiese who Werder had to thank for the rescued point with a remarkable save from Timo Rost (86’) and a brave save from Sergiu Radu in the final minute.
