Werder Bremen put on yet another gala performance on the ninth match day of the season during their tie against FSV Mainz 05. The league leaders crushed the side from Rhein-Hessen 6:1 (3:0). At a sold-out Bruchweg, with 20,300 supporters, Miroslav Klose (14’/21’), Aaron Hunt (20’/75’), Naldo (80’) and Diego (89’) scored the goals for Werder with Mimoun Azaouagh (74’) getting on the score sheet for the home side.

Captain Frank Baumann and Per Mertesacker were both given the green light to return to action having both recovered from niggling injuries. Trainer Thomas Schaaf was able to put out the same eleven which over turned Bayern Munich last weekend. Werder started with a bang and by the 8th minute Torsten frings had already brought the best out of FSV keeper Dimo Wache who was able to bat away the German internationals distance drive. The first of many shots on the Mainz goal.

Klose with two goals in eight minutes

Mainz fought their corner well and even tested the reaction speed of Tim Wiese with a low shot from Chadli Amris (12’). A loss of possession by the same player two minutes later was to result in Werder taking the lead. Hunt fed Klose with a through ball. The World Cup ‘Golden Boot’ winner shook of his international colleague Manuel Friedrich to slot home and give the Green-Whites a 1:0 lead (14’).

Imre Szabics had an almost instant answer for his side as he attempted a 40 meter lob which landed just left of the upright (16’). Werder hit back with a double whammy. Klose took on a pass from Naldo and powered forward before totally unselfishly laying off to Aaron Hunt who could slip the ball into an empty net and make it 2:0 (20’). Hunt then turned provider for Klose with a cross from the right after a pass from Diego and Klose was well positioned to sink Werder’s third in almost record time (21’).

A shocked Mainz did manage to get two more shots on goal through Markus Feulner (32’/44’). Werder looked confident, very much in control and came close to a fourt as Diego tried a lob from 35 meters which came agonisingly close to embarrassing Wache who was way off his line. The Brazilian thought he had scored a fourth for Werder after some good work by Hunt but the referee called an off-side, an incorrect decision (44’).

Three Werder goals in the closing phase

After the break the Green-Whites took their foot off the gas and allowed Mainz to get into the tie. Aside from a misplaced cross by Azaouagh which landed on the roof of the net (54’) the home side didn’t get much right. That all changed with a 74th minute free kick which Azaouagh bent in from 20 meters to make it 3:1.

Werder hit back straight away. Klose broke free and got a shot away which Wache could only parry and Hunt pounced to make it four for the visitors (75’). Naldo then rose to head home a Diego cross which made it 5:1 (80’). The scoring still wasn’t finished and after substitutes Zidan and Klasnic combined unsuccessfully (85’), Diego hit in a shot which was deflected off the leg of Manuel Friedrich past Dimo Wache to make it 6:1 (89’). The Brazilian scored in his fifth game on the trot – a record as long as Werders winning streak.
