Christian Schulz will not be available for Werder’s Friday night Bundesliga tie against FSV Mainz 05. Trainer Thomas Schaaf made the announcement prior to Wednesday’s morning training session. “It doesn’t look good. Christian felt the problem again and knows that he well not be up for the game on Friday”, explained the Werder coach. Only one day before ‘Schulle’ had been hopeful of making the match having served up a rehab programme on the training pitch with team-mates Per Mertesacker and Daniel Jensen.
Things look more promising for Per Mertesacker though who has since recovered from a viral infection and will join up with his team colleagues for a full training session on Thursday. At the same time captain Frank Baumann wants to get back to full training after his Achilles problems. “Frank was just running today but there is a good chance that he could be back tomorrow”, explained Thomas Schaaf.
Still unclear is the condition of Tim Borowski. Following a sliding tackle during Tuesday’s training, the German international felt a twinge in his knee which he had injured during the Champions League tie against Barcelona. “I hope it’s not too bad but it is annoying and sets me back”, said Borowski. An MRI scan on Thursaday should confirm the extent of the damage.
In the warm Autumn sun, hundreds of fans again took to the trainings pitches to view their heroes getting stuck in training. Mohamed Zidan in particular took plenty of time to sign autographs and talk to the spectators. The Egyptian spent a half an hour post training signing posters, shirts and posing for pictures.
