Miroslav Klose has been officially nominated for the selection of the 'European Footballer of the Year' award. The Werder Bremen striker was named amoung a group of 50 players nominated for the award by the French football magazine 'France Football'. Further international colleagues selected amoung the elite are Michael Ballack (FC Chelsea), Jens Lehmann (FC Arsenal), Lukas Podolski, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philip Lahm (all Bayern Munich).
'France Football', who traditionally host the voting, have nominated a total of eleven players from the World Cup runners-up France and six from winners Italy. FC Chelsea are the most highly represented club with nine from their ranks amoungst the nominees.
The last German international to pick up the illustrious award was Borussia Dortmund's Matthias Sammer back in 1996 when he collected the 'Golden Ball'.
Aside from 'World' and 'European Player of the Year' nominations. Miroslav Klose is also a hot tip for the title of 'World Striker of the Year'. Shortly before the end of the year, Klose headed the list in which only goals in international and continental competitions count with German strike partner Lukas Podolski in second place. So far Klose is on 14 goals, with the Bayern Munich youngster on 13.
