A first class demonstration of football from Werder Bremen on the 7th match day of the season saw them come away from Bochum with an impressive 6:0 win. The guests took control from the outset and had their way with VfL in disarray. Aaron Hunt put the Green-Whites ahead after just seven minutes but despite complete dominance and several clear chances Werder could only take a 1:0 lead into the break. In the second half the guests really turned on the style and extended their lead with goals from Christian Schulz (61’), Jurica Vranjes (76’), the stunning Diego (78’), Clemens Fritz (88’) and Naldo (90’) to earn a hefty but not undeserved 6:0 win.
Werder started the tie with the same eleven which took to the pitch three weeks ago as they beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3:0 and set out at an extreme pace. Clemens Fritz put Christian Schulz through on right, the youngster beat Butscher but could only hit the outside netting – and that after just two minutes. The visitors forced VfL back and used the space left by the very deeply postured Bochum defence.
Hunt pounces to give Werder the lead
It took until the seventh minute for Aaron Hunt to notch up his second goal of the season. The VfL keeper could only parry a Torsten Frings effort and then scrambled to get a hand on Diego’s follow up but the keeper could do nothing to deny Aaron Hunt who was perfectly placed to slam home the free rolling ball. Christian Schulz could have doubled the lead in the 14th minute with a header from a Diego free-kick but his attempt missed the post narrowly. Bochum managed one journey to the unknown territory of the Werder box through Dabrowski but from that point on it was one way traffic. There were chances by the minute for Werder with Womé (17’), Klose (21’), Baumann (23’) and Diego (27’) but a second continued to elude the Green-Whites.
And so, with a narrow lead, Werder went into the break and Bochum had the opportunity to take a break from the constant pressure they were under. The opening period of the second 45 minutes saw the hosts have a little more of the play with Werder less imposing than during the first half. After keeper Skov-Jensen brilliantly stopped Klose from doubling the Bremen lead (48’), both Trojan (52’) and Zdebel (54’) missed chances to pull their side back level.
’Schulle’ strikes
The visitors had allowed Bochum back into the game until somewhere around the hour mark but then up popped Christian Schulz to put away Werder’s long overdue second goal. A Frings corner was unnecessarily flicked by to Schulz by Maltritz and the Werder winger slotted home with ease (61’).
As the substitute Jurica Vranjes hit a shot, after a pass from Diego, and had it wickedly deflected over the stranded keeper to make it 3:0, Bochum’s will to battle on collapsed. The almost amazing Diego eventually put the icing on his performance as he danced through the Bochum defence and keeper to make it 4:0 (78’). In the closing minutes Clemens Fritz, with a well placed drive, and Naldo with a ferocious free-kick finally buried Bocum and gave Werder their biggest win of a still young season.
A 6:0 away win in Bochum was the proof of the upwards trend currently sweeping through Bremen. The win also saw the Green-Whites leap-frog to the top of the table as Bayer Munich beat Hertha BSC Berlin 4:2 and Schalke won 2:1 in Hamburg.
