On the seventh match day of the current season, bottom of the table VfL Bochum have angled the support of their most famous fan. The German singer Herbert Groenemeyer will attempt to fire on his side by opening the game with the VfL club hymn as well as reading the names of the teams before kick-off.

The names which the music start will be reading out are not to be underestimated in the opinion of Thomas Schaaf: “They have very good individual players, we will have to be careful. Our opponents know all too well that it’s a game where they can let us come at them as the expectations on their behalf not great are but could change things immensely should they prove successful. They will give their all.”

The fact they the expectations are not too high is probably connected to more than just their current position in the table, Werder are level on points with Hertha BSC Berlin in third place, but also more with the season so far from the host side. Bochum have only managed one win (2:1 against Bielefeld) and one draw (1:1 against Nuremburg) from their first six games of this season: “It’s surely not the start they would have envisaged “, explained Thomas Shaaf who continued: “We have to collect our points now, I imagine over the next few games the teams who are going to remain at the top will pull away from the rest, it’s important now to ensure we stay amongst them.”

Schaaf is hopeful that his team can take the positive swing from recent games to Bocum with them. “It’s important that we have a few positive experiences before the bundesliga takes it’s winter break – we ant to continue with that right now.” A quick review of previous games at the old ‘Ruhrstadion’ (now the Revierpower-Stadion) will also bring positive memories for Schaaf. The Green-Whites last won there in the 2004/2005 season 4:1 with a ‘Klose-Gala’. The Werder striker was only introduced in the 46th minute and proceeded to score all three goals of the half.

Also in the years before their were positive results. Back in their championship winning season Werder only managed a 0:0 draw in Bochum but notched up an important point along their way to the title in a game that was played in just one direction. During Schaaf’s reign at Werder, they have never lost against Bochum: “We’ve always played very well there”, admitted the Werder coach. Bremen’s last defeat in Bochum dates back to the 1998/1999 season when VfL won the tie 2:0. Torsten Frings is the only player left in Bremen who was on the pitch that day.

Back then, a future Werder player by the name of Frank Fahrenhorst, scored the first goal and at the weekend the Green-Whites will face another ex-Weser man. Christoph Dabrowski wore the Bremen shirt from 1995 to 2001 and is still a guiding light in the Bochum midfield. The coaching staff at Werder are also aware of the goal scoring abilities of new signing Theofanis Gekas and will have to be alert when he’s on the ball.

Definitely not on Herbert Groenemeyer’s list will be VfL stars Martin Meichelbeck (ligament tear), Tommy Bechmann (knee surgery) and Bennie Auer (viral infection). On the Werder side there will be no involvement for either Partick Owomoyela (ankle) nor Tim Borowski (knee ligament tear).
