The Northern rivals in Germany shared the spoils on the fifth match day of the season with Hamburg SV and Werder Bremen drawing 1:1 (0:0). Tim Borowski put the Green-Whites in front just on the hour after some fantastic work by Clemens Fritz. Ten minutes later Hamburg drew level with a header from Bastian Reinhardt after a Mehdi Mahdavikia corner. HSV Iranian international saw red in the 74th minute after a wild challenge on Diego.
Werder Bremen once again had to make do without the services of top striker Miroslav Klose in front of a 57,000 sell out crowd at the AOL-Arena. The striker is still recovering from a bruised foot. Defender Per Mertesacker is also still unfit leaving Werder with the same starting eleven which lost 2:3 against VfB Stuttgart last weekend.
In a fast paced opening phase Werder appeared a lot more determined than they had done the previous week but the game still lacked a clear direction. The only half chances on goal came from distance efforts with Hugo Almeida (10’), Naldo (14’) and Diego (25’) all causing Sascha Kirschstein problems but not seriously enough.
HSV with the better of the chances
HSV were strong on the ball and active however it took the home side 23 minutes to get close enough to the Bremen goal to cause any problems. Sanogo profited on the break from a slip by Petri Pasanen and passed on to Danijel Ljuboja who tested the reflexes of Tim Wiese with a low drive.
Six minutes later, the second hundred percent chance for the hosts. Ljuboja was again involved, crossing into the box where Kevin Kompany rose completely unmarked for a header which he somehow put wide of the target from five meters out. A lucky break for Werder who were mere spectators on this occasion. The third chance for the Hamburg outfit fell to David Jarolim who had the ball in the net after a through ball from Sanogo but was standing in an offside position (35’).
There was little to see of the Green-Whites before the break who were happy to get into the half time break with the score still at 0:0. After the break, Christian Schulz replaced a disappointing Pierre Womé and added more stability to the back four but failed to produce a forward drive.
Borowski goal turns its on its head
Werders build up work left a lot to be desired and lacked determination while HSV remained the better of the two sides. All the more surprising then was the lead for the visitors in the 58th minute. Some fantastic play from Clemens Fritz on the right instigated the move with the young defender beating two HSV players before passing to Tim Borowski. The German international didn’t need to be asked twice and struck low from the right edge of the box inside the far corner of the net – 0:1 in Werders favour.
The Bremen goal turned the tie on its head – in a positive sense – with the only real Green-White chance on goal finishing in a goal. The pace and spark of the game picked up too but not always so positively with a number of HSV fans adding their feelings to the mix. On more than one occasion, miniature glass ‘Schnapps’ bottles were flung from the North-End stand but luckily none managed to reach the target of Tim Wises in the Werder goal.
Reinhardt equalises
The visitors raised their game having taken the lead and could have doubled it in the 66th minute as Fritz again involved picked out Almeida’s head. The Portugese international missed the opportunity to extend the Werder lead and was then substituted in the 69th minute with the introduction of Ivan Klasnic. By that stage though, instead of being 2:0, the scoreboard now read 1:1. From a Mahdavikia corner, Bastian Reinhardt got free and buried past Tim Wiese into the bottom right hand corner (68’). Soon after though, the HSV provider would have his last involvement on the day. The Iranian international made a horrible lunging challenge on Diego and referee Wolfgang Stark gave him his marching orders – Diego could also play no more part after the tackle and had to be replaced by Aaron Hunt.
The German Under 21 international almost made an immediate impact, very nearly turning a Clemens Fritz free-kick into the net (79’). It was to be the last attempt on goal of a lively Northern derby which failed to produce a winner. For Werder it was the end of a four game losing streak and the visiting side can be much happier with the point they won than the home side can afford to be with their takings.
