After a less than impressive start to the season with two wins and two defeats, the Green-Whites will play a friendly against non-league VSK Osterholz-Scharmbeck on Tuesday, 19.09.2006 at 6pm. The game against the winners of the Bremer Tageszeitung (newspaper) Super-Cup should have taken place four weeks ago but had to be postponed dew to extremely bad weather conditions.
VSK play in the German fourth division for the first time in the clubs history this season. The side from Lower Saxony gained promotion with a heart stopping win on the final day of last season. The lowly clubs trainer is no stranger to Werder Bremen – Günter Hermann. The ex-Green-White has been at the helm in Osterholz-Scharmbeck for six seasons now, and with a great deal of success. The trainer who proudly wore the Green-White for 13 years has guided VSK from the doldrums of German football to the fourth division during his reign. “The game against Werder is very special for the lads”, admitted Hermann whose son Patrick is one of three ex-Werder players sons who are part of the squad. Dennis Votava and Daniel Reck are also part of the Osterholz-Scharmbeck side. Hermann has set the following goal for the game: “We want to prevent a double figured defeat and hope that no-one gets injured.”
VSK have started the new season with two wins, one draw and three defeats but the eleventh placed side have most recently shown improving form in the ‘Oberliga-Nord’, beating SV Henstedt-Rhen at the weekend. The official club goal for the season is to avoid relegation although Hermann is hoping for a little more: “It would be nice to make the top ten.”
In the opinion of Werder coach Thomas Schaaf, the game is “A further good test especially for the players who haven’t played so often lately.” Above and beyond that the 46 year old coach continued: “We will make the journey with all of the fit players that we have available and have every intention of putting on an attractive footballing display.”
