What the Werder fans displayed at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night bared no comparison to Champions League group stage joviality, the support was worthy of the tournament final!! Worthy of taking the cup!! The 3,000 travelling Green-White faithful celebrated their heroes in a manner which left the security people and stewards from the English champions at the game rubbing their eyes and wondering if it really had been the home side which had taken all three points. Although 25 minutes after the game the Werder fans were still dancing in their block and despite the overtime the ground staff would have to put in, one thing was clear – many of the English fans were dumbfounded by the German enthusiasm and showed their appreciation with broad smiles.
The Green-White throngs continued their celebrations so long that the disappointed players finally took their place on the turf in front of the fans and a rousing version of their famous ‘Humba, Humba, Humba, taeterae’…was initiated. Prior to that, every lap of the pitch that the Bremen players took in their post match trot out was met by a ‘Mexican Wave’.And all that was only the extra time period of a game which the fans roared on for its entirety: “That is an absolute mirror image of our performance. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed such an event after a 2:0 defeat”, commented Tim Borowski the post match revelry.
Werder can always rely on the support of their fans and they are a major element in our hopes of reaching the second round. The Werder team hope to ride on the waves of this elation towards three home wins in the group stage: “Calculating this very difficult group is quite simple. If we want to progress we must win our three home games and hope that our opponents in the group draw the odd game and take points from another points”, commented Klaus Allofs, who continued: “For that reason we can be confident that the result here tonight hasn’t ruined our chances.”
The general manager also doesn’t see the 5:0 win for Barcelona against Levski Sofia as any cause for concern: “The result doesn’t make our situation any better but it doesn’t make it any worse either.”
Allofs was also clear in stating that the task ahead must be correctly assessed: “We made no secret of the fact that we are aware that Chelsea and Barcelona are the runaway favourites. A lot would have to happen for us if we were to progress from this group and that includes a header against the crossbar coming off the underside and going in.”
How seriously they took their opponent despite the win was proven by Chelsea coach José Mourinho in his post match analysis: “That was a fantastic result against a direct opponent for second place.”
Werder hope to turn their intentions to actions after all the praise they received following their performance at the English champions home ground. Tim Borowski: “We can’t afford to come away after the Barcelona game with zero points.” Ronaldinho & Co. will at the very latest then experience the volume of the Werder crazy fans at the Weser Stadium.
