Chelsea's new German signing has warned his new club of the strengths of Werder Bremen. In the 'Matchday Magazine', from the London clubs last league tie against Charlton Athletic the national captain spoke out: “There are days when they simply play very good football. They are a very attackingly orientated side and want to score goals in every game.” Ballack sees exactly that as the chance for the English champions to capitalise: “Sometimes though they offer their opponents openings with their style of play.”

During the interview, Ballack called upon the fans not to underestimate their German opponents. The Saxony born man considers the Green-Whites to be better staffed now to deal with the international task which faces them: “They are a strong team. There is a core group of seven or eight players who have played there together for two or three years now.”

More than any of the other players, Ballack has recommended the London club to be particularly wary of his international team mates. On Miroslav Klose, who he personally considers to be one of the worlds top strikers, he said: “He is playing the best football he as ever played at the moment, and that’s been so for six months now. He scores regularly and is capable of deciding a game on his own.”

Ballack has just as much respect for his one time Bayern Munich team mate Torsten Frings: “I played with him for one year in the Munich team and for two years in the German Under 21 side. He is a really good defensive midfielder. He is a strong runner, two footed and very flexible.” The German captain also named Tim Borowski: “Tim has made a very good development over the last two or three years. He is technically adept and has a very strong shot.”

But Chelsea are not only very well informed about Werder through Michael Ballack. There are other players who have experienced Werder Bremen during the Schaaf era. Michael Essien was in the Olympic Lyon side which two years ago gave Werder a 7:2 drubbing. The midfield man scored two on that occasion in France. Defender Khalid Boulahrouz has horrible memories of Werder as an ex-HSV player and will still have Werders 2:1 wn at the AOL-Arena from last May still fresh in his mind.
