Torsten frings and Miroslav Klose were both involved in heling Germany to their second grou win in qualification for the Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland. As expected trainer Joachim Loew's men notched up a clear win but few had expected to see thirteen goals. Bayern Munich striker Lukas Podolski scored four (11., 43., 64., 73.), Miroslav Klose grabbed a brace (30', 45') as did Sebastian Schweinsteiger (29', 46') and substitute Thomas Hitzlserger (66', 73'). The remaining goals were scored by captain Michael Ballack (34'), Manuel Friedrich (87') with his frst international goal and Bernd Schneider (89') from the penalty spot.

5,000 fans filled the Stadio Olimpico, of which there were 4,500 German fans, to see what was an expectedly very one sided game. The bulk of the tie took place in the opposition half of the field. Much to the frustration of the highly fancied visitors, San Marino keeper Aldo Simoncini held a clean sheet until the twelevth minute before Lukas Podolski gave Germany the lead. Prior to the first goal, Miroslav Klose (2') and Torsten Frings (9') had the chance to put trainer Joachim Loew's team ahead.

Having taken the lead the World Cup's third place team got a taste for goals and soon began to run ravage. Torsten Frings hit a distance shot in the 16th minute but was denied by keeper Simoncini who warmed up for the game by having tennis balls shot at his goal in an attempt to simulate the German teams efforts. Midway through the first half the visiting DFB side turned up the heat on their lowly guests but Michael Ballack (25') and Bernd Schneider (27') both failed to extend the lead before Bastian Schweinsteiger slid in to turn home a Marcell Jansen cross (29').

One minute later Klose made it 3:0 by rounding Simoncini and shoving the ball into an empty net. Soon after the captain Michael Ballack broke his goal drought with a shot from 16 meters after 35 minutes. Podolski snatched another to make it 5:0 before the Werder striker and World Cup 'Golden Boot' winner Klose condemned the minnows from San Marino to a 6:0 half time deficit.

It took the semi professional side from the former Italian state some 37 minutes get a shot in towards an untested Jens Lehmann but Manuel Marani's effort flew well wide of the mark. Just hours before the kick off, Werder midfielder Tim Borowski had to pull out of the tie with adductoral problems having been guaranteed a place in the side by trainer Joachim Loew. Borowski's replacement was club team mate Torsten Frings who took up a place in the centre of midfield meaning Germany started with the same eleven which beat Ireland 1:0 at the weekend. The centre ofdefence was once again filled by Arne and Manuel Friedrich who had a lot less to do on this occasion compared to the previous tie.

Loew brought some fresh legs at the break with Gerald Asamoah replacing Klose and Davis Odonkor coming on for Michael Ballack. Just seconds after the re-start Bastian Schweinsteiger got his second with a well placed free-kick to make it 7:0. As the game wore on, the German side wore San Marino down yet further and two more goals from Lukas Podolski, two for Thomas Hitzlsperger and one each for Manuel Friedrich and a Bernd Schneider penalty rounded off the scoring to give Germany a 13:0 win - their highest since 1940.
