Seven Werder Bremen players were on international duty at the weekend for their national sides. Aside from Miroslav Klose, Tim Borowski and Torsten Frings who started their Euro 2008 qualifiers wit a 1:0 home win against the Republic of Ireland thanks to a Lukas Podolski goal, there were also games for Mohamed Zidan, Hugo Almeida, Daniel Jensen and Petri Pasanen.
For Mohamed Zidan there was a special occasion during his match for Egypt as he scored his first international goal in the fifth minute and played a major part in the Egyptian sides 4:1 win against Burundi in their African Cup qualifier. Werder's new signingn Hugo Almeida made his second appearance in the Portugese first team on Friday when he came on as a substitute to face Daniel Jensen and Denmark. The Danes beat Portugal 4:2 with Werders 21 year old loan signing entering the fray in the 66th minute with Jensen having been introduced four minutes previously .
Petri Pasanen and his Finish colleagues caused one of the upsets of the weekend winning their Euro 2008 qualifier against favoured Poland 3:1. Werder's defender played out the complete 90 minutes of the tie.
