After two Bundesliga games and two wins against Hanover 96 (4:2) and Bayer Leverkusen (2:1), the Green-Whites now prepare for a friendly game against VSK Osterholz-Scharmbeck on Tuesday, 21.08.2006 at 6:30pm. The Lower Saxon side qualified for the game with a win in a cup competition organised by a Bremen newspaper. VSK play in the 'Oberliga Nord'(higher northern league) in Germany this season for the first time in the clubs history. The Lower Saxon side won promotion in a heart stopping final game of the previous season.
Bremen will clash with an old acquaintance in Osterholz. The ex-Werder player Günter Hermann has been the trainer in Lower Saxony for six years now and with a great deal of success. Hermann, who spent 13 years in the Green and White of Bremen, has lead Osterholz from non-league non-existance to the fourth division in Germany. "The game against Werder is something special for the lads", admitted Hermann whose son Patrick is one of three of the ex-Werder mans children in the Osterholz squad. Both Dennis Votava and Daniel Reck are active for Osterholz-Scharmbeck. The goal for Günter Hermann is quite clear though: "We want to keep the score below double figure and hope noone gets injured."
This season the fourth division side have started with four from a possible six points and are in sixth place in the table. Hermann: "I am very satisfied with the fantastic moral that my players have shown." The official seasons goal from the clubs bosses is to avoid relegation but Hermann is hoping for more: "It would be nice to finish in the top ten."
Werder coach Thomas Schaaf see the tie as being: "A further good test, especially for the players who haven't played so often." The 46 year old also wants to offer the fans "an attractive game of football." Definately not in the reckoning for the tie are Naldo and Per Mertesacker. Naldo has still not recovered from a thigh injury and the German international Mertesacker is still preparing for his Bundesliga comback in a sport rehab centre in Donaustauf.
VSK are expecting a massive turnout for the spectacle against Werder Bremen but Hermann has assured that there will be tickets available on the night of the game at the stadium.
