Then in a dramatic closing phase Miroslav Klose pounced to make it 3:2 for Werder (85') and Daniel Jensen completed the turn around with a fourth for the Green-Whites (90').

Active begin for both sides

The 37th clash between the two north German clubs started actively with both sides showing from the outset that they both had plans of taking all three points. Werder marked up the first opening of the game after six minutes when Pierre Womé and Tim Borowski combined. The German internationals cross-come-shot became a threat to the Hanover goal but Robert Enke managed to turn the ball over the crossbar. From a Womé corner Vahid Hashemian headed the ball against his his own post. With nine minutes played the home side had their first chance when Szabolcs Huszti fed Hashemian who rounded Tim Wiese but placed his shot wide of the post.

Deserved lead, equaliser deserved

In the 19th minute Werder took a deserved lead. Following a pass from the midfield Klasnic combined with Klose who couldn't get his shot under control and the ball spun away behind him straight to the feet of new signing Diego who held his nerve and shovedd the ball home to make it 0:1. The home side accepted the wake up call and almost drew level with a free-kick fromt the corner flag eight minutes later but Tim Wiese was on hand to clear the danger. Shortly after Chavadar Yankov found himself with only Wiese to beat but again the keeper proved strong. In the 40th minute the improved Hanover side got their just rewards. Michael Tarnat played Jiri Stajner through who beat Wiese to give '96' a deserved equaliser - 1:1.

Hanover with the better re-start, Bremen bounce back

Havoner made the better start to the second half and after Huszti missed a clear chance in the 52nd minute Hashemian took his oportunity and gave his side the lead, beating the Werder keeper from around the penalty area (67'). Bremen turned up the tempo and pressure on the '96' goal and could have equalised ten minutes after the Hanover lead through Miroslav Klose who headed a Daniel Jensen cross against the crossbar. Two minutes later the Werder strikers had more luck though and substitute Hugo Almeida climbed to meet a cross from Fritz which had sailed over the keeper to make it 2:2 and again the sides were level.

Werder turn the screws

With 81 minutes on the clock, Diego had the chance to give his side the lead yet again. The 21 year old firstly stole the ball from Steven Cherundolo before dancing around Frank Fahrenhorst and Enke but then lost control of the ball which rolled harmlessly out of play. Almeida had the chance to get his name on the score sheet again but his header from a Womé cross missed the target. Bremen were in control and a counter attack with Hunt, Klose and Diego frinished with the 2006 World Cup 'Golden Boot' winner giving his side the lead (85'). Hanover threw everything into attack, leaving Werder even more space. Diego played a perfect pass to Daniel Jensen who lobbed Enke to make the final score 2:4 in Werder Bremen's favour.
