The first title of the season goes to Werder Bremen!! The Green-Whites beat Bayern Munich 2:0 to win the 'Liga-Pokal' (league cup) for the first time in the clubs history. Ivan Klasnic scored both goals (29', 66') on the day, the first after some stunning play by Miroslav Klose, the second from a powerfully driven free-kick from 25 meters.

The Werder coach Thoams Schaaf made five changes to the side which started the semi-final against HSV. Andi Reinke, Clemens Fritz, Frank Baumann, Tim Borowski and Mohamed Zidan made way for Tim Wiese, Patrick Owomoyela, Daniel Jensen, Christian Schulz and Ivan Klasnic.

Following a cautios start, the Green-Whites created the first opening of the ga,me. Klose took on a pass from Christian Schulz who rounded the stranded Oliver Kahn in the Bayern goal but, in doing so, played the ball too heavily and from an almost impossible angle was unable to get the ball back on target. The first celebrations on the terraces were short lived as Lukas Podolski put the ball into the Werder net on 23 minutes but was pulled back for a questionable offside decision from referee Manuel Gräfe.

The "K&K" boys are back in town

Bayern took the initiative during this phase but were unable to produce anything worthy of a goal. Werder, on the other hand, were much more successful in their efforts to find the net. Miroslav Klose led both Lucio and Willi Sagnol a merry dance before passing perfectly, and selflessly, into the run of Ivan Klasnic who struck first time with his right and gave the Bayern keeper no hope of rescuing the situation - 1:0 Werder (29').

Bayern's answer was to hit Werder with attacks down the flanks speared by Karimi, Lahm and Hargreaves but nothing more than a hermless effort from the English international came of their spurts. At the other end Werder could have increased their lead by half time as Klasnic picked out Frank Fahrenhorsts dart into the Bayern box with a cross but Kahn was well placed to pluck the headed effort out of the air.

While Werder coach Schaaf decided against making any changes to his side during the break, his counterpart Felix Magath made three substitutions. Resting his tiring World Cup participants Lahm, Schweinsteiger and Podolski he brought Salihamidzic, Ottl and Dos Santos. Salihamidzic had the opportunity to equalise for Bayern in the 56th minute but wasted his chance. Werder had made the far better start to the second period and could have doubled their lead with a deflected shot by Miro Klose in the 48th minute or a Diego drive that was blocked down on it's way through. Shortly after, Klose picked out Klasnic with a long pass which van Buyten underestimated but the striker was unable to find the target with Kahn rushing out to block the danger.

Klasnic blast buries Bayern

On the hour, Thomas Schaaf decided it was time to give World Cup star Miroslav Klose a well earned rest and introduced Aaron Hunt to the fray. Bremen's drive forward lost it's bite but their defence had few worries defending their slender lead. The game was to be decided by a 66th minute free-kick awarded 25 meters from the Bayern goal. Naldo, Diego, Daniel Jensen and Ivan Klasnic all discussed at lenght who should take the set piece. The Croatian international got the nod and hammered a shot with his stronger left foot through the wall and the Bayern keeper never got as much as a sniff as the ball whizzed into the far corner of the net - 2:0 to Werder.

Christian Schulz almost made it three as Diego laid off a pass with his heel but this time Olivwer Kahn was able to pnch away the danger. The Green-Whites took the tempo out of the game but for all Bayerns will they could produce nothing more than a Lucio header which flew over the bar (75') and a Salihamidzic shot which Wiese was able to deal with (81'). Aaron Hunt had a fantastic opportunity to sink Bayern in the 83rd minute but he blasted over the crossbar.

That was to be the last action of the day and Werder Bremen won the first title of the season and not undeservedly, the League Cup for the first time in the clubs history.
