Werder Bremen lost their final pre-season friendly 1:0 (1:0) against Girondis Bordeaux. As faith would have it, it was Johan Micoud who scored the decisive goal in the first half. The ex-Werder man was substituted under a standing ovation in the second half.

Werder created the first chance of the game in front of 12,000 fans at the Marschweg-Stadion in Oldenburg. The French keeper batted away a Daniel Jensen drive and as Mohamed Zidan got to the rebound he went down under a strong challenge. All eyes were on referee Sascha Thielert who was not impressed and saw no reason to award a penalty. After fifteen minutes Jensen, who replaced the injured Diego as playmeker, got the ball to Ivan Klasnic who was caught somewhere between cross and shot subsequently placing the ball in the arms of Ulrich Ramé. The Green-Whites had the third chance on goal too. Ivan Klasnic headed to Zidan who blasted home but had his effort denied for a clear offside (21').

'Joe' sinks his old colleagues

Two minutes later it was 1:0, but for the French club. Micoud lobbed the ball into his own path and left Frank Baumann stranded to lash home a shot from the edge of the box. Keeper Tim Wiese spread himself but couldn't stop the ball finding the far corner (23'). Werder bounced back well and showed a lot more of their ability than they had in the previous games against Kaiserslautern or Piräus but had little fortune going forward with too much going directly through the centre. Left full-back Pierre Womé played an important roll and attempted to get things moving for the Green-Whites down the left but as his colleague Patrick Owomoyela on the right, had little impact. The 'high points' of the first half for Werder were two mini openings for Klasnic (28', 42') and a harmless Christian Schulz effort from distance. Micoud new side almost had a second when confusion in the Werder defence let Francais through but his shot was blocked away (37').

Then it was all over for Tim Wiese, Patrick Owomoyela and Ivan Klasnic (who exchanged shirts with Micoud) with Andi Reinke, Clemens Fritz and Hugo Almeida taking to the field for the second period. Zidan stayed on and had the best chance to equalise after just five minutes. The Egyptian was skulking around the far post from a Jensen corner but couldn't get his close range shot on target. Almeida could also have pulled the sides level when a deflected Schulz free-kick fell to his feet but having controlled the ball the Portugese international then shot wide of the right post (59').

Micouds substitution the highlight of the second half

Johan Micoud was again at the centre of the highlight of the second period, this time with his substitution. 'Le Chef' made way in the 64th minute and was met by a standing ovation. The game lost it's way after that and the French side just did the neccessary with the lead looking safe while Werder failed ideas to get through the tightly drilled defence. Andi Reinke was called into action in the 81st minute as Darcheville got a shot in but that was the end of the action.

After the third friendly defeat in a row, the Green-Whites are hoping to brak their poor run in the Premiere League Cup on Tuesday (8:30pm at the Weser Stadium). Hopes lie with the return of Torsten Frings, Tim Borowski and Miro Klose who were still missing for the Bordeaux tie.
