On Friday, 28.07.2006, Werder Bremen will take to the pitch for their eight and final pre-season friendly. At 6pm in the Marschweg-Stadion in Oldenburg the Green-Whites will play French runner-up Girondins Bordeaux who have a much loved ex-Werder man in their ranks in the form of Johan Micoud. The playmaker made the move from the Weser to his home club and Champions League participant during the summer break.

It was a move that Werder and their loyal fans would rather not have seen but the result is great anticipation on the occasion of his return - all be it a short one. "Micoud did a lot for Werder over the last few years and had a decisiove roll in our success. It's nice that we can see him off with an attractive friendly", commented Klaus Allofs in jovia form.

Team coach Thomas Schaaf is also delighted that the game was possible despite a packed calender for both sides: "He's earned this game. Joe always documented what he wishes to achieve through his work on the pitch and at the same time drove the others along with him. Apart from that he showed grace on the pitch that only few possess", said the 46 year old. Micoud himself is alspo very happy at getting the chance to bid 'adieu' to the fans and team in style: "It's wonderful to be back here, I had a great time in Bremen. I experienced extremely emotional moments with the team and fans here."

The tie against Werder is an important test for the five time French Champion who have only managed one win from their previous four friendlies - a 2:0 win over French second division side Libourne Saint-Seurin. The other three games finished in defeat at the hands of Benfica Lissabon (0:2), Tottenham Hotspurs (1:2) and Schalke 04 (1:3). Now the french side want to prove that their qualification for the Champions League was no fluke. Micoud said: "We now finally want to beat a strong opponent."

The stars of the team trained by ex-Brazilian international and World Cup participant from 1990 Ricardo Gomes, aside from Micoud, are Vladimir Smicer and Denilson. The 81 time Czech international, Smicer, is in his second season at the French side having joined them from FC Liverpool after their phenomenal 2005 Champions League win. Denilson, also two years in Bordeaux, has made 17 appearances for the Brazilian national side, winning the World Cup with them in 2002. Denilson himself played only a minor part in the final against Germany, coming on for two time goal scorer Ronaldo in the 90th minute. Goalkeeper Ulrch Ramé is also a well know name. In 2000 the keeper was back-up for Fabian Bartez as france won the European Championship. I year later as 'Number 1' he won the Confederations Cup with France.
