Werder Bremen have won their fourth friendly on the trot in preparation for the 2006/2007 season in superior fashion with a 5:0 win against second division Rot-Weiss Essen. The Green-Whites put on a determined and enjoyable performance at the Georg-Melches-Stadion in Essen in a game which they controlled for long periods displaying fast, attacking football combined with lots of neat passing moves.

The game could hardly have started better for the Green-Whites. Ivan Klasnic, who only arrived back from his post World Cup holiday last week, put the visitors in front. Snatching on to a floated free-kick from new signing Diego, the Croatian flicked the ball from the left, over keeper Karim Zaza, into the right side of the net. Just three minutes later the Brazilian tried his luck himself with a drive from the edge of the box that Zaza could only parry away.

With thirteen minutes on the clock, the second division side came up with their first opening. After some fine solo work, striker Alexander Löbe let fly from the edge of the box but Andreas Reinke was equal to the effort and turned the ball around the post. Two further minutes and Werder should have doubled their lead but as Mohamed Zidan got on the end of a long pass, the ball squirmed away from him and Zaza gathered the ball from the Egyptian. The keeper wasn't so lucky in the 25th minute though as Ziadn was fed by Diego, skipped past defender Thomas Kläsener and slotted the ball through the RWE keepers legs to make it 2:0. Until the break, the hosts had more of the play but could find no way past the Green-White defensive wall.

Trainer Thomas Schaaf made six changes during the break but their was no change in the flow of play and the Bundesliga sides dominance. Substitute Hugo Almeida put in the equally fresh John Jairo Mosquera with a back heel but new RWE keeper for the second half, Andé Maczkowiak cleared the danger. Two minutes later Almeida found himself with only the keeper to beat and chipped perfectly into the top left corner. Werder were now the clearly superior side and in the 56th minute made it 4:0 as Patrick Owomoyela got on the end of a Diego corner which a defender firstly blocked but the German international pounced again and put the ball away.

The ever busy Mosquera had another chance to get on the scorer list in the 63rd minute but having turned the Essen defence inside-out, the youngster ran a tight angle and couldn't get his shot on goal. The final goal of the game fell in the 69th minute as Mosquera burst down the left and his cross made its way to Leon Andreasen who hammered past the RWE keeper from 20 meters. Almeida had a further chance in the 73rd minute and although Essen pressed late on, again Wiese and the Werder defence were able to keep a clean sheet.
