Werder Bremen made a successful start to their 2006/2007 preparations. Against non-league TuS Pewsum the Green-Whites put on an impressive performance and won the tie 5:0 (3:0). Trainer Thomas Schaaf was happy with his sides first performance and in particular with the three new signings. "There were a number of situations where Diego showed what he can do. Pierre Wome moved well and you could also see that Clemens Fritz wanted to shift things along on his side of the pitch."

Werder had problems getting into the game after five days of tough training and the first two real chances fell to the Pewsum side. In the seventh minute Tim Wiese was happy to see a curling shot only find the side netting and two minutes later Christian Schulz was forced to make a last ditch block to clear the danger.

Following the two early incidents the Bundesliga runners-up took control of the game and the game was played in only one direction. As a result of the pressure, Naldo met an Aaron Hunt cross to get his first goal of the season, hammering under the crossbar to beat an in form Pewsum keeper who commented on his own performance after the game: "It was incredibly motivating for me to play against a team who'd beaten Juventus turin and other big teams."

Ten minutes later and after a number of chances for Werder, Frank Fahrenhorst gave the Green-Whites their second. Patrick Owomoyela headed into the box and in the melee Fahrenhorst reacted most quickly with a scissors kick to make it 2:0. Shortly before the end of the first half, Jerome Polenz stole in with a header to give the Bundesliga side a respectable 3:0 cushion going into the break.

During the half time break Thomas Schaaf made a complete team switch and allowed an even younger side show their talents in the second half. The team was mainly made up of Under 23 players who also saw to it that the fans were entertained in the second 45 minutes. Werders Brazilian young-star Thiago Rockenbach da Silva let a shot fly from 22 meters in the 56th minute which fit perfectly in the angle between post and bar but unfortunately struck the angle and bounced back into play. Tweleve minutes later the South American got his name on the scorer list when he took on a pass with his heal and slipped the ball neatly past the keeper (68'). Three minutes later, Werders Austrian international Martin Harnik headed home from a Norman Theuerkauf throw-in which was nodded on by Dominic Peitz.
