Goalkeeper Christian Vander, who had been at loan at Werder from VfL Bochum, has recieved a two year contract at the Bremen club. General manager Klaus Allofs made the announcement on Friday afternoon: "Christian Vander has absolutely met the challenges we set him. He showed right from the outset that he is a genuine alternative. His performances in the Regional league played a major part in the reserves avoiding relegation. During his Bundesliga appearance in Frankfurt, he proved in front of a large audience the kind of quality he possesses", praised Klaus Allofs.
On the negotiations, the one time Werder striker remarked: "Christian made it clear early on that he didn't want to return to Bochum and so we met an agreement quickly. He wants to take on the challenge of battling for a set place in goal with the other candidates." Christian Vander was allowed to leave Bochum on loan at short notice in August 2005 after Werder keeper Tim Wiese tore a cruciate ligament in a friendly against Hansa Rostock.
Vander made his professional debut in 1999 for KFC Uerdingen 05 in the second division. Altogether he made ten second division appearances for the Krefeld team and VfL Bochum. The 1,90m keeper made 20 first division appearances for Bochum and mae his first appearance for the Green-Whites last season when Tim Wiese was injured in Frankfurt. Vander's Werder debut was marked by a perfectly clear sheet and a 1:0 win for his new club. His greatest achievement was coming runner-up in the 2006 German championship.
