The heat put him momentarily out of action on Tuesday but he was back in action on Wednesday morning. Naldo, together with new team-mate and fellow countryman Diego were the first two people ready for training on Wednesday morning - 15 minutes before the rest. Despite continuingly high temperatures, Naldo made it through the full session at 11am.
In spite of temperatures in excess of 30 degrees celcius, trainer Thomas Schaaf set about his sweat inducing programme of coordination, springing and shooting exercises. "The heat is not a problem for us. After five years in a row coming here, we finally have the temperatures that we've always hoped for on this island", according to coach Schaaf.
The Werder players are happy about the pressure. German international Patrick Owomoyela admitted on Wednesday: "The advantage for me of not having been selected for the national squad is that I can take part in the complete pre-season preparations. The last time I could do that was the season we were promoted with Bielefeld and I profitted from the hard work with Uwe Rapolder then. Now we are working just as hard. I'm the kind of player who has to work very hard to reach my peak. I started working on my preparations during the break. A sign of that is that my lacktat test results were much better than I'd expected."
Patrick Owomoyela was not the only one to make a positive impression during his first training session. Thomas Schaaf also had words of praise for his new signings: "Each of them have done their thing well so far."
There is only one person who won't be picking up points over the next few days. Petri Pasanen, who badly sprained his ankle and strained ligaments on the day of arrival left the island on Wednesday afternoon. "He will recieve better therapy in Sporthep Werder in Bremen and we hope he can return to us as soon as possible", commented Schaaf on the move to send Pasanen home.
