Werder Bremen's players are getting to know the sizzling island Norderney. During the second training session temperatures rose to a sweat enducing 34 C. For the Werder players who have visited the island for the fifth year in a row, they are seeing a new side to the island. "I was told something completely different - drizzle, 15 C and high winds", explained new signing Clemens Fritz, who is also happy about the heat: "I prefare this to when it's cold. I'm not realy an early bird but as I looked out the window this morning before jogging I saw the sun and just felt better."

Not quite so convinced by the heat was strangely Werders Brazilian defender Naldo who was forced to take a break in the shade after becomming dizzy. "That's nothing unusual - it's really hot and he also has the long trip in his muscles. He's come from wintery Brazil and is suffering with jet-lag. We'll keep an eye on him", commented general manager Klaus Allofs who watched the session. The ex-Werder striker doesn't expect any further problems: "We just have a few game formations on the programme for the afternoon, he'll be back for that."

Definately out of action is Petri Pasanen. The Finn was unfortunate on his very first evening on Norderney. Following the fitness tests on Monday, Pasanen injured his ankle in a five-on-two game. He will not take part in team training over the next few days but will stay till the end of the training camp on the island. The Finnish international will complete an individual programme. "Luckily it's nothing serious. After the initial extreme pain it's now going well", said the defender. While the rest of the team went jogging, Pasanen, with the team physio and Klaus Allofs went for a performance orientated bicycle trip around the island.

There was a performance oriented finish to training for the rest of the squad at lunch-time. "Despite the weather it took quite a long time. I think I did quite well all the same. I was surprised that it was already 1pm as we got in the bus to return to the hotel. We'd already done two hours hard work", remarked Clemens Fritz.
