Frenchman Johan Micoud will make a return to Bremen with his new team-mates from Girondins Bordeaux for a friendly game in Oldenburg's Marschwegstadion. The match will take place at 7pm on 28.07.2006. The game between two teams who have directly qualified for the Champions League will be the highlight of Werder's pre-season preparations. The game will be the German sides last friendly before the League Cup semi-final which will be played four days later.
Werder's general manager Klaus Allofs was disappointed that the game couldn't be played, as planned, at the Weser Stadium: "We wanted to give our fans and Johan Micoud the chance to say their goodbyes to one another but unfortunately the regulations for the League Cup tie have gotten in the way of that."
In an attempt to protect the value of the competition, in a time scale of four weeks, no other game can be played at the site of a League Cup match. On 02.08.2006 at 8:30pm, Werder will play the winner of the match between Hertha BSC Berlin and Hamburg SV.
A later date for the friendly with Girondins Bordeaux has been hindered by the tight schedules of both clubs.
