Patrick Owomoyela has accepted the decision to leave him out of Germany's Worls Cup squad with bitter disappointment. The 26 year old took questions from the media after the squad was announced this afternoon: "I don't think anyone would hold it against me if I'm very disappointed today. Unfortunately it's not just a bad dream, it's reality. I've been put on the stand-by list - it's like having an invalid ticket", remarked Owomoyela on a decision that he claims hasn't hit as hard as he'd expected: "Before such huge decisions I tend to go through every eventuality in my head to prepare for the worst. I realise now that I can accept the decision better that I thought. I'm not going to become an alcoholic."

The Werder star will still need some times to come to terms with the situation: "The first thing I did was turn off the telephone. I needed to get some space. This week I'll train as usual at Werder and then we'll see."

Despite his own feelings, the Bremen player dosen't have anything against any of those responsible: "I'm not going to hold a grudge - I'm not angry at anyone. I got the answer to the question I've been asking myself for weeks now. I'm not going to start thinking about whether or not they're in the right. Someone always draws the short straw."

Patrick Owomoyela wants to use the decision to help motivate him yet further: "It's all been an upward curve for me in the last two and a half years but not I have to take a real step backwards. I can understand that I would have had to have played better to avoid having doubts about myself. That didn't quite work out. I'm going to do everything I can now to get back into the squad as quickly as possible."

There is absolutely no question though that he will be wishing his other international colleagues all the best for their World cup challenge: "I'll be gunning for them just as much as if I were sitting in the team bus myself." The Werder man doesn't yet know where he will be spendiing his time now during the tournament: I don't really know where I'll be for my extended holiday but I don't think I'll be avoiding the whole thing. I'm too much of a football fan for that."
