Another typical Werder Bremen cracker was the order of the day! On the second last day of the season and for the last time in front of their own fans, Werder Bremen swept aside FC Cologne with a 6:0 (3:0) annihilation. HSV suffered a 4:2 defeat at the hands of Hertha in Berlin setting up a tie with cup final appeal in Hamburg next weekend with second place a direct qualification for the Champions League at steak.

Due to the decision taken by the courts concerning Johan Micoud and the suspension for five yellow cards being served by Patrick Owomoyela, coach Thomas Schaaf was forced to make two changes to the team which won 5:3 in Duisburg on Wednesday night. Petri Pasanen and Leon Andreasen filled the gaps. Werder took to the pitch on a beautiful spring afternoon with a bound in their step and put their opponents under pressure right from the outset. Daniel Jensen took a pass from Klose and tested the keeper after just two minutes but failed to get enough behind his shot. Klose himself soon after hit a volley into the outside netting (4') and then Nelson Valdez set up Tim Borowski for the third good chance for the Green-Whites in the opening ten minutes. At the other end Lukas Podolski broke past Frank Fahrenhorst but couldn't surpass Tim Weise who saved with relative ease (8').

The first goal of the game seemed only a matter of time Micoud replacement Daniel Jensen fed Klose out wide. The German international skipped past Lell and crossed sublimly with the outside of his right boot and found Borowski thundering in on the far post to blast the ball into the roof of the net - 1:0 (11'). ith the wind in their sails Werder played light-footed, flowing football and left Cologne looking powerless to defend themselves. In the 19th minute, Klose was on hand to prove once again that he is in the form of his career. From a position wide on the left of the Cologne box the striker took on a misdirected defensive clearance to volley into the top right hand corner of the net to make it 2:0 with the goal of the month, if not the whole season.

The Klose Show : two goals, two assists

The Klose Show was to continue. Taking on another pass from Jensen, again the striker crossed with the outside of his boot and again found Borowski powering forward to head Werders third goal (25'). The following period was like a carbon copy of the game in Duisburg on Wednesday. Werder taking a stunning 3:0 lead and then deciding to sit back and let their opponents come at them. Thw stadium rocked as Werder padded towards the half time break. Cologne on the other hand took the Werder break as a wake up call and began to create themselves. Helmes tested Wiese (28') and was also caught just offside from a Feulner cross (44'). Carsten Cullmann had the best chance of the game when he headed against the post from a Podolski cross (40').

The Green-Whites where somewhat lucky to take a clean sheet into the half time break - contrary to the Duisburg game. In the second half the home side picked up the pace again. Ivan Klasnic came for Nelson Valdez at the break an had an immediate impact. Corner Jensen, Fahrenhorst nodded on to Klasnic who was perfectly place to head Werder into a 4:0 lead (50'). With the scoreline as it was, Miro Klose could be forgiven for missing a sitter when keeper Bade pushed the ball onto the strikers foot after saving a Borowski shot but the striker blasted over the bar from five meters.

Farewell for Lagerbloom and van Damme

For the last time at the Weser Stadium in Werder colours, Pekka Lagerbloom came for the impressive Leon Andreasen and Jelle van Damme replaced Christian Schulz to bid their farewells to the fans, but noting was going to change the flow of the game. The home team were enjoying fast attacking football and it was a text book counter attack that gave the 42,000 spectators their next chance to cheer. Frings hit a long ball to Klasnic who in turn passed on to Jensen. The Dane returned the ball with a back heel flick to the Croatian and he hammered the ball past the Cologne keeper - another cracker and now 5:0 (69').

The Werder fans were still hungery for even more as was Miroslav Klose. Following braces from Borowski and Klasnic, now it was Kloses turn to get a second on the day and his 24th of the season. The 27 year old shimmied past Sinkiewicz and lashed his shot past Bade inside the near post (77') - 6:0 and Klose's 40th scorer point of the season - Phenomenal!!!

As the news of HSV's defeat in Berlin filtered through, there was now stopping the celebrations at the Weser Stadium. The fans are now baying for the 'Final' which will take place in Hamburg next weekend and which will decide who must qualify and who goes directly into the Champions League draw. A perfect way to let the home fans celebrate the final home tie of the 2005/2006 season. Now only a win against their great Northern rivals can top it!
