On the 30th match day of the season, Werder Bremen had to settle for just a point in Wolfsbug after a 1:1 (1:1) draw. The Green-Whites couldn't make use of an early lead or the red card for VfL's Quiroga (26').

For the first time this season, Thomas Schaaf started with the same eleven as in the previous week. Once again Nelson Valdez got the nod ahead of Ivan Klasnic and rewarded the coach for his faith in the Paraguayan with a goal after just six minutes. Miroslav Klose and Johan Micoud won headers from a long Frank Fahrenhorst free-kick, the ball then fell to Patrick Owomoyela who played in Valdez. The striker gave keeper Simon Jentzsch no chance from close range - 1:0.

Instead of heaping pressure on the now wobbling Wolfsburg side, Werder sat back and allowed their hosts to come at them. The Lower Saxon side battled their way back into the game and had their first chance through Mike Hanke who placed a header just wide of Tim Wiese's right post. The keeper had been caught wrong footed and would have had no chance of stoping the effort had it been goalbound.

Defensive mistake leads to equaliser

Ten minutes later though, the Werder keeper did have to fish the ball out of his net. Weise managed to push away a flying header from Hristov but the ball was behind the goalline. To make sure, Stefan Schnoor poked the ball back over the line. The equaliser was the result of poor marking in the Werder defence from a Karhan corner which left Hristov and Marlet totally free.

The goal gave Wolfsburg a new lease of life but luckily for the Bremen team, 'Wolves' showed their weaknesses in front of goal. To make matters worse for the home side, after just 26 minutes they were a man down. Quiroga saw the red card for a wild challenge on Klose but despite their disadvantage, Wolfsburg managed to keep the Werder defence busy. Both Hristov and Hanke had a chance to put their side in front after a long ball from Schnoor on the half hour but Bremen got lucky again. The Green-Whites had only one effort to test the now three man Wolves defence. Owomoyela got on the end of a quickly taken Micoud rfee-kick but Jentzsch was able to hold onto the ball (39').

Jensen misses out on second of the season

Trainer Thomas Schaaf's half time talk was obviously a loud and clear one as his side came out for the second half with a lot more fire than they'd showed in the first. Werder took complete control during the first fifteen minutes of the second half and forced the Wolfsburg side back in their own half. Despite their personnel advantage, most of Werders attacks were stoped by a tightly packed defence. One of the only really clear chances fell to substitute Daniel Jensen after Nelson Valdez headed him through. The technically exceptional Dane danced past three VfL players and then let fly only to see his shot ricocheet away off the outside of the post (63').

That was to be the end of Bremen's pressure football without any success coming from it. The following minutes were controlled by the battling host team. Tim Wiese underestimated a Steve Marlet free-kick and was all too happy to see Hanke fail to connect (70'). That was to be 'Wolves' only chance but Bremen also had little to offer. Ivan Klasnic was introduced and got on the end of a perfectly weighted pass from Tim Borowski but screwed his shot a meter wide of the mark (80').

A sharing of the points was the fair result in the north derby after Werder failed to make use of their advantage following Quiroga's early red card. The point was enough for the Green-Whites to keep Schalke, who drew 1:1 with Cologne, at bay but after HSV's 2:0 win against Duisburg, Werder are now five points adrift of their northern rivals.
