Werder Bremen somewhat surprisingly ran away with the top game on match day 29 when they beat league leaders Bayern Munich 3:0 (1:0). Werder took the lead in the 33rd minute with a Sebastian Schweinsteiger own goal after some fantastic play by Miroslav Klose. The visitors dominated the bulk of the play after the break until substitute Daniel Jensen doubled the lead with his first Bundesliga goal in Green-White (79'). Tim Borowski then rapped things up with Werder's third in the 83rd minute - 3:0.

The Green-Whites began the North-South clash with one change to the starting eleven which turned out against Frankfurt last weekend. Patrick Owomoyela got the nod ahead of Daniel Jensen on the right side of midfield. Johan Micoud wore the captains armband with Frank Baumann and Torsten Frings both out injured.

Valdez blows a sitter

The home team attempted to force the issue from early on but it took ten minutes before they found their way to the Bayern goal. Miro Klose rose to meet a Johan Micoud corner but couldn't keep his header down and didn't trouble Oliver Kahn's goal. The German national striker did test the ex-German number one just minutes later when a shaky Kahn could only box Klose's shot away back into the field of play. Klose was then involved again in Werder's best effort to that point when he collected an Owomoyela header and pulled two defenders out of position before knocking the ball back to the onrushing Nelson Valdez who struck from eleven meters but was denied by the lightening reflexes of Kahn in the Bayern goal.

The visitors from Munich were clearly having problems coming to terms with the condition of the pitch on a typically wet Bremen afternoon. It took until the 24th minute for Bayern to get their first real sniff of goal, and that thank's to the insecurities of TIm Weise in the Bremen goal. The Werder keeper came for a corner but could only finger tip it into the path of Roy Makaay whose volley luckily didn't find it's target. Ballack and Lahm teamed up with ex-Werder man Claudio Pizarro to test the Bremen defence again but the shot proved too weak to do any real danger. At the other end it was a different story. Micoud set Klose on his way to the by-line, where he cheekily allowed Demichelis to go to ground before delivering a chipped cross towards Tim Borowski. Under pressure, Schweinsteiger tried to clear for a corner but saw his headed effort sail into the top corner of the net - 1:0 for Werder.

The goal did little for the quality of the game with the play falling somewhat short of expectations before Bayern threw themselves into attacking mode prior to the break. Tim Wiese was was forced to snatch at the ball twice before covering the danger from a Schweinsteiger drive from the edge of the box (43'). Pizarro then soon after thought he'd grabbed an equaliser but the linesmann's flag pit paid to his celebrations.

Bayern pressure ineffective

The second period was to be a different story. A more aggressive and forceful Bayern Munich emerged from the dressing rooms at half time and forced Bremen way back in their own half of the pitch. Zé Roberto, who was introduced for Salihamidzic during the break had the chance to equalise after just two second half minutes but couldn't control his tweleve yard ffort. Demechelis had an even better chance in the 55th minute when he found himself with the goal at his beckon call and headed into Wiese's arms. Soon after Michael Ballack drove into the box and let fly with a sixteen meter drive which whistled just outside the post.

With the home team under immense pressure, they then lost their midfield playmaker Johan Micoud. The Frenchman picked up an ankle injury and had to be replaced by Daniel Jensen. The change had firstly little effect on the game with the Green-Whites still unable to releae the pressure on their defence.

Munich were creating chances minute-for-minute but couldn't find a way past the alert Tim Wiese or the steady Frank Fahrenhorst and Naldo. Wiese was equal to a Demichelis strike (59') before Pizarro had yet another goal disallowed for offside (63'). It took until a quarter hour before the end for Tim Borowski to send Bremen's first shot towards goal in the second half.

Two slick counter attacks decide the tie

It was then two lightening quick counter attacks that eventually decided the tie in Bremen's favour. Ivan Klasnic, who came for Nelson Valdez, headed on to Miro Klose who in turn headed into the path of Daniel Jensen. The Danish international kept his nerve and slipped the ball past the advancing Oliver Kahn to make it 2:0 and notch up his first Bundeliga goal in Werder Bremen colours. Klose and Klasnic combined again in the 83rd minute to set up Tim Borowski who riffled home his eight goal of the season to make the final score 3:0 and sink the visitors from Munich.

Bayern were down but not completely out with a header from Michael Ballack hitting the crossbar late on. Werder Bremen took all three points in a game that's scoreline tells little of the true run of play. When only for one night, Bremen move into second place and a definate Champions League position ahead of HSV.
