The award which was initialised by boxing legend Max Schmeling and is voted for by the Ferderation of German Sports Journalists (VDS) was presented to Klose by German national team assistant coach Joachim Löw during a DFB press conference.

The striker earned the award for his honesty during a Bundesliga match last season on 30.05.2005 against Armenia Bielefeld. In the 28th minute of the tie, Klose saw to it that referee Herbert Fandel changed his decision to award Werder Bremen a penalty. "No, it wasn't a foul. The Bielefeld keeper touched the ball away with his hand first and then I slid into him", explained the leagues top scorer to the man in black at the time.
