Werder Bremens players left the stadium on Wednesday night amongst feelings of ecstacy. A 3:2 win over Italian giants Juventus Turin will instill a great deal of self confidence prior to the Bundesliga clash with Borussia Mönchengladbach at the weekend. The Werder coach Thomas Schaaf has not such happy memories of the Green-Whites last meeting with Gladbach. On the sixth match day of the season, Werder dominated the first half and went in at the break 1:0 up thanks to a Jelle van Damme strike. In the second half the Green-Whites lost their way and the first game of the season at the same time.

Captain Frank Baumann has equally horrific memories of the game. The number 6 attempted to clear the ball and ended up turning it past his own keeper to decide the game in Gladbach's favour: "We beat ourselves in that match. For me personally it was the unhappiest game of the first round", remembered the captain who is also wary of the task ahead: "It'll be very difficult to get back to the everyday work after the highlight in the Champions League. We will have to be disciplined."

The coach see's an advantage in the poor performance the last time they met as he turns his mind back to the Bundesliga: "The last game will help us. We connect that match with memories of a strong first half and a terrible second that ended with a result that was very frustrating." The memory of the performance against Juventus should be used to help repeat that: "It's a nice situation for me now. I can always use that game as a measure to show the players what they are capable of when we call up our potential."

With Borussia Mönchengladbach, Werder await an opponent that is difficult to reckon with at the Weser Stadium. Bo Svenson, who is in Gladbach since February, has helped to stabilise Horst Köppel's defence. The second half of the season began equally as stuttered as the first. As in late summer, Borussia could only manage one win prior to the Werder game, last week they beat Cologne 2:0. "That is a success for Borussia which will help steady them", warned Thomas Schaaf who knows well that the win against Werder was a jump start to the season for Gladbach. Bremen don't intend to repeat the favour.

Borussia coach Horst Köppel knows this too: "More than a point in Bremen would be almost a sensation." The coach will be without the services of Peer Kluge who, like Torsten Frings, is suspended for the match. Werder are still unsure as to the availability of Miroslav Klose who was replaced on Wednesday with cramp and a slight calf strain.
