It took the bottom side in the Bundesliga to inflict Werder Bremens first home defeat on the 21st match day of the season. The Green-Whites lost 0:2 (0:0) despite have the territorial and possessional edge over long periods and therefor slip back into third place behind HSV (1:0 against Mainz).

36,218 fans at the Weser Stadium saw captain Frank Baumann and Tim Borowski return having each served a suspension for each picking up their fifth yellow card, meaning a return to the bench for Jurica Vranjes and Daniel Jensen. Tim Weise replaced the injured Andreas Reinke in goal to make his BUndesliga debut in the Werder starting eleven. The 24 year old keepers ex-club almost caused him an early shock. FCK captain Marco Engelhardt found himself with only the keeper to beat after three minutes but Weise was alert to the danger and cleared the danger with his foot.

Naldo cracks crossbar

It took that incident to shake the home side into action. In the thirteenth minute, Brazilian Naldo crashed a 30 meter free-kick off the FCK crossbar. The effort was to tbe the start of a Green-White power play with efforts from Klasnic and Fahrenhorst. Again and again, Werder found themselves facing a Kaiserslautern wall of defence which proved almost impossible to break down. FCK goalkeeper Jürgen Macho was called into action twice to defuse Werder set plays. Firstly Frank Fahrenhorst tested the keeper from a Borowski corner, as did Torsten Frings three minutes later (39', 42'). Just before the break, Frings broke free on the right to gather a Borowski pass, skipped past Engelhardt and crossed to Ivan Klasnic whose resulting header flew agonisingly wide of the target.

As the tie progressed, a possible point for the guests was looking more than flattering with Schaaf's eleven continuing to press for an opener, but Lautern becoming more confident and adventurous going forward. Werder were begining to show signs of frustration and Thomas Schaaf was forced to show a reaction bringing Daniel Jensen for Tim Borowski and Patrick Owomoyela for Petri Pasanen on the hour. Jerome Polenz then also got another chance to impress replacing Ivan Klasnic - but all to no avail. Werders next chance came from a Torsten Frings corner which Naldo piled into the FCK defence, the rebound falling to Nelson Valdez who shot on the spin but was well wide of the goal (66').

Clear Owomoyela goal waved away

62% possession, 15:1 corners, 29:3 crosses and 27 shots on goal but still no success. Werders wastefulness was bound to cost dearly and in the 71st minute came the revenge of the missed chances. Substitute Sören Halfar got past Owomoyela and delivered into the box with ease where Boubacar Sanogo, despite being surrounded by Schulz and Naldo, climbed to head past Tim Wiese - 0:1. Werder reacted with angry attack but again found themselves with a determined red wall to break down. Then in the 78th minute, Patrick Owomoyela headed a Christian Schulz corner goalwards. Skela cleared the ball from clearly a meter behind the line but referee Thorsten Kinhöfer's view was blocked as was his assistants and play was waved on, much to the dismay of all in Green-White.

That was to prove the height of Werders attempts to drag themselves back into the match despite their continued search for an equaliser. With the hosts pushed far forward, FCK hit on the counter with Halfar feeding Sanogo who could only hit the post with an empty goal at his mercy. The rebound fell luckily to the feet of Skela who beat Owomoyela to make it 0:2 and the match was decided on a day that most Werder fans will very quickly wish to forget.
