Two of Werder Bremens most critisised individuals proved the heroes of the day as Werder Bremen edged past Armenia Bielefeld with a 1:0 (0:0) win. Frank Fahrenhorst headed Werders 'Golden Goal' in the 72nd minute after a Johan Micoud free-kick rebounded back into play from the crossbar.

The hosts turned the heat way up in the closing phases but were unable to beat an in form Andreas Reinke, who foiled a number of great goal scoring chances, in the Werder goal.

As expected, Nelson Valdez joined the birthday boy Ivan Klasnic (26) up front in place of the injured Miroslav Klose. The Green-Whites controlled proceedings from early on and kept the ball within their own ranks. Bielefeld stood deep and compact, making it difficult for Werder to come within shooting distance. The visitors managed this on only one occasion in the first half when Tim Borowski fed Torsten Frings who took the ball cleanly on the volley and hammered goalwards only to be denied by the lightening reactions of Mathias Hain in the Bielefeld goal (9').

Armenia wasteful, Kobylik skies penalty

The hosts had their first chance through a Isaac Boakye header after 14 minutes which zipped past the left upright. Nine minutes later, Fatmir Vata played Boyake through with a long, direct pass. Fahrenhorst's tackle came too late and the Ghanean tumbled down in the box and referee Dr. Wack had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. The home sides big chance of taking the lead though was sorely wasted as David Kobylik blasted the spot kick over the crossbar.

Bielefeld recovered from the disappointment very quickly and had their next chance a mere two minutes later. Boakye beat Naldo in a sprint and got a shot away but missed the target by mere inches. After another effort by Tobias Rau (28'), Werder took more control again and allowed their hosts only one more chance before the break. Kobylik put through their returning son from Berlin, Artur Wichniarek, but the Polish international couldn't control his shot (34'). Despite being the better side, the Green-Whites were missing the neccessary bite up front.

Schaaf's eleven stepped up the pressure again after the break but goal chances remained few and far between with the Valdez/Klasnic duo up front having little chance to impress. It took 65 minutes for Werders best man on the Torsten Frings to win the first corner of the match. Christian Schulz, who had previously picked up his fifth yellow card of the season and will miss out against Mainz, failed to keep his effort under control from the half cleared corner.

Fahrenhorst's first Werder goal clinches win

It took a further set piece before Werder eventually found the target. In the 72nd minute, Marcio Borges brought down Nelson Valdez to give Werder a free-kick in a central position 23 meters from goal - the perfect distance for Johan Micoud. The Frenchman bent the ball around the wall and against the angle of bar and post. Frank Fahrenhorst somehow managed to twist himself and get his head on the ball controlled into the corner past a flailing Hain. The first Werder goal for the 28 year old defender.

It was to prove an especially important goal for the defender. Bielefeld answered with an angry attack but found their master in Andreas Reinke who was on absolute top form on the day. Firstly the keeper managed to get back and turn a Boakye header over the bar (77'), then he stopped a Westermann effort from distance before standing his ground to stop Dalovic who was alone on his way to goal (89').

The 37 year old kept Werder in the title race with his heroics in Bielefeld. It was Werder's first win on the Alm in over 21 years. Back then in the 1984/1985 season, the Green-Whites finished second behind Bayern Munich, where they find themselves now after the win.
