There was more than just the scoreline to compare with the game in December. 6,500 fans at the TSV Kropp sport complex saw Werder have the better of the first half and create the better goalscoring chances. But just as in the Bundesliga Werder made too little of it. It took a quarter hour of testing each other on a difficult surface before Werder got going. Ivan Klasnic bustled past Boulahrouz on the left before laying off into the path of Tim Borowski, who returned from injury, but HSV keeper could turn the shot away for a corner. Boulahrouz headed the corner clear but the ball fell toward Torsten Frings who pulled the trigger on the volley and buried past Wächter in the HSV goal. A dream goal to give Werder the lead (16').
Frings comes agonisingly close to a sceond
HSV went for the immediate answer with Barbarez picking out Japanese striker Takahara who power through the Werder defence but not past Andi Reinke. The best Werder man on the day was Torsten Frings who came agonisingly close to snatching a second goal. Again the midfielder combined nicely with Klasnic and rounded the keeper but with the goal at his mercy, Frings smacked his effort against the right post (20').
From that point the match took a turn for the worse, losing in tempo and quality. Werder could have extended their lead after a slip by HSV centre half Daniel van Buyten. Miroslav Klose snatched the ball away from the defender but Wächter was able to parry the Geman internationals shot. The rebound fell again to Klose who laid off to Klasnic but the Croatian striker blasted over the bar. The Hamburg side took until the 39th minute before they had their next chance with Benjamin Lauth getting on the end of a Klingbeil cross with a flying header but didn't do enough to beat Reinke in the Werder goal.
Vranjes and Klasnic blow chances
Werder were without a doubt the more dangerous side and had a further chance to double their lead as Jurica Vranjes, fed by Klose, foxed Boulahrouz but failed to keep his shot on target (42'). Thomas Schaaf used the half time break to make a number of changes including bringing Tim Weise for Andi Reinke as pre-arranged. Ivan Klasnic tested the woodwork again with a drive in the 54th minutebut from then on HSV took the upper hand and grabbed a surprising equaliser. Barbarez knocked a Fillinger free-kick on to Takahara who slipped away from Owomoyela and Jensen to put the sides back level.
The game lost it's way after the equaliser and with HSV still in control, they also came close to a winner through substitute Mustafa Kuckovic but the young striker sliced his shot sparing Werder a further parallel with the game in the Bundesliga when Kuckovic was on target.
