All signs are pointing towards a game full of goals when Werder Bremen play Fenerbahce Istanbul on Friday, 13.01.2006 at the Topkapi-Sport facility in Antalya. The game is a clash of the goal machines of their individual leagues. The Green-Whites hit the target on 46 occasions in the first half of the Bundesliga season, 11 more than closest goal scoring rivals Bayern Munich. Fenerbahce trainer Christoph Daum's men are equally successful in front of goal having scored 43 goals thus far.
The Turkish champions have the jump on their German opponents though, they also possess the best defence in the Turkish Super League. Keeper Volkan has conceeded only 17 goals which is then no surprise that Daum's man lead the table with 45 points, four clear of local rivals Galtasary.
Werder Bremen have never played an official game against the Istanbul side but, as last year in Belek, the sides did meet for a friendly match, the Turks winning the tie 4:1. Werder were trailing 3:0 at the break and improved immensly in the second half and even managed to score with a Valerien Ismael free kick in the 82nc minute.
Fenerbahce drew attention to themselves this year in Germany during their Champions League clash with Fc Schalke 04. The Turks rescued a 3:3 draw at home but lost the return leg 2:0. Neither side managed to progress in the tournament and as bottom side in their group with just four points, the Turkish side missed out on the UEFA-Cup too. The Turks top scorer in the Champions League was Brazilian Alex with three goals.
German coach Christoph Daum has been at the helm in the Turkish capital since 01.07.2003. In both of their championship winning seasons, the Turks also scored most goals (2003/2004 - 82, 2004/2005 - 77).
